“Oh yeah? Which salon? I’ll go warn her about the asshole she’s dating,” Kari snarked.
I nudged her with my knee and she gave me a look as if to say, Are you kidding me? You’re actually talking to this guy?
“Us too. We’re just about to head home.” I was trying, I really was. It’s so difficult trying to have a normal conversation with him considering how things ended between us. I hated that things were so awkward after being together for so long.
“So uh, you’re parents doing okay?” He shoved his hands in his pockets, making his arm muscles bulge. I couldn’t help but notice and unfortunately, I think he knew it. At least, the smirk he gave me said he knew.
“They’re good, you know, normal crazy Petersons.”
The world’s most awkward silence fell between all of us. I could feel my face turning bright red as I searched for something to say but my mind was blank. Kari’s fake coughing fit brought us out of it and we both spoke at the same time.
“So right, yeah. I’d better be going—”
“Kari and I were just—”
We smiled at each other, waved an awkward goodbye, and I prayed I’d never have to see him again. Just as I was turning to Kari to thank her for ending that horrible moment, Brad called out.
“Oh, just one more thing, Gin. Have you checked your email lately?”
I squinted at him, trying to figure out if I was missing out on some joke. What did my email have to do with anything?
“I guess, maybe a couple hours ago…why?”
He nodded, a sly smile curling his lips. “You might want to check it again. See ya!” Both Kari and I stared at him speechless as he walked away. A familiar feeling of unease began creeping up my spine.
“What the hell was that about?” I asked.
“I have absolutely no fucking idea, but why aren’t you checking your email?”
“I don’t know if I want to. That was creepy. I feel like I need a shower.” I fumbled through my purse, searching for my phone. As I thumbed through to my messages, I continued, “I didn’t even realize who he was at first.”
Kari chewed on her straw. “I hate to say it, but he does looks amazing now. Not that Tristan has any competition, but…yeah.”
“Hold on, I’m in 3G-4G hell.” With the internet agonizingly slow, it seemed to take forever before my inbox refreshed. Amid the junk mail, I spotted Brad’s name. My heart thudding in my chest, I clicked on the email titled “For you.”
Before I could say anything, a video started…
“Oh my God! Nooooo!”
