In the kitchen the counters were bare except for bags of hotdog buns and relish trays for the cook-out.

  “I don’t understand,” I said.

“Don’t worry, we didn’t touch your room,” she said. “But when I woke up that day, I felt like all my life before was a sort of dream, and I needed to be up and doing.”

Her face crumpled. “I did the right thing, didn’t I?”

“Of course, Grandma. This is terrific!”

She pulled me into the living room, where a sofa and two chairs sat by the fireplace. “And look, we found these pictures of Franny and Dan.” On the mantle was a series of frames with my parents in every one of them. “That’s their honeymoon in Paris,” Grandma said. She pointed to another one. “And this was when you were born.”

My mother held a pink bundle in her arms, and her eyes looked out from the frame full of happiness, and something else. Hope.
