May Be the Case Page 9

  " Did you have fun?"

"Oh, if you knew! There's a great Spa center in Bathsheba. I also learned a few words in Bajan. I continually thought - why Lidi persists in studying in her free time? I brought some souvenirs for everyone! If you came with us you would have had fun. Do you want a stuffed sandwich, dear?"

Lidi had always envied to Paris, among many things, the lightness with which she faced life. So far she didn't understand if that bothered her husband, who named her a few times and gave her all the free time she wanted, but in the family they were accustomed to this aspect of her. All in all, she smiled.

"Only orange juice, my dear, I have to run away. I've a course and an appointment for lunch with Roberta."

Paris passed her the cardboard. That delicious feeling of freshness reassured her. "Thank you."

"I haven't seen her for a while" Paris said, referring to Roberta. "She's okay. Work goes on, she and Patrizio are very happy to live together."

"A little less her mother" Paris commented. "That woman... and mom doesn't party without inviting her. Can't she understand that they love even if he's broke?"

Shaken, Lidi kept a comment for herself. How could Paris understand it, if she seemed to have her entire existence resided in money? She was never there. Had it not been for a mix-up, she would have put roots in Barbados as she did one month ago in Shanghai. Yet, her inclination didn't stop her from seeing the exaggeration of Roberta's mother. "What if you have lunch with us, Paris? Roberta is very thankful to you for the gifts, she would like to tell you personally."

Paris lit up. "Maybe. Where are you going?"

At that moment, Lidi realized she had rushed. "To be honest, a pretty diner, they prepare some delicious sandwiches. Today we have to choose the colors of the baby's room and paint it..." She dropped the sentence. Paris' enthusiasm had quickly collapsed. A diner and a paint bin were not exactly programs for her. Finishing to fill the plate, the girl pulled the blonde fringe behind her ears. "Now that I think about it, it's better to postpone it. Logan wants to take me out today." She paused. "Tell Roberta I'll call her."

A maid crossed the kitchen, interrupting them with a greeting. Lidi remembered to have little time. "We'll talk later, I have to shower, I have a lesson."

"What a hurry! Not even a hug of welcome?"

Lidi apologized and Paris embraced her laughing, wrapping her with her thin arms in her expensive scent, in her aura of exquisite refinement. "Thanks for the invitation, say I'm sorry to Roberta, we'll do it another time."

She winked at her, "I'll salute the new brides for you!"
