Born of Fire Page 18

“You heard me. I will admit to you, if I was into men…” Draper’s voice trailed off as he nodded toward the approaching man. “Good luck tonight. The guys are rootin’ for ya.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, for our final fight tonight we have…”

Somehow the announcer’s words were lost as he moved forward, nothing but lust in his mind. Focusing on the fight was going to be next to impossible. “There you are. Thought you might miss the fight.”

“Never would I miss my protégé.” In one hand, he held up a savage looking whip. In the other a set of chains.

“What are those for?” Caldre was still amazed Sakima had survived the fire without a scratch and he suspected he’d been the vampire responsible for killing William, but they never talked about the night. There wasn’t any need. If history was repeating itself over and over again, the tethering chain had been broken by the creature’s untimely death.

William’s entire corporation had been razed by the FBI and members of his own family indicted for collusion. He had to wonder how many of them were family. Vampires were living in various sectors in the world; some said plotting to rule mankind. The thought would have seemed ludicrous to him merely a year before. He’d thought about Michael on several occasions, wondering if he could have saved the poor soul from such a horrible death. Maybe one day he’d ask about the curse again. For now, he was content savoring the essence and rich flavor of the man—the man who was his master.

“Incentive. Whips and chains to remind you of your place and to encourage you to win.” Sakima’s voice was husky, laced with seduction. “And I will be using these later this evening. You’ve been a bit out of line lately.”

The tone and the thought left excitement surging through him. “I look forward to it, Master.” As he moved toward the ring he threw up his hands, enjoying the roaring crowd. Members of the press blanketed the area, longing to obtain the perfect picture for the next day’s news.

  “Blaze! Blaze! Blaze!”

As the men and women screamed out his moniker, the nickname something he was called even at the station, Caldre wished he could tell them just how perfect the choice was. Born in fire. Ending in fire. Now he understood the meaning. As the roar died down, he faced his opponent and bowed before taking the stance. Now it was time to kick some ass. After all, everyone had a dirty little secret.

  “Ground and pound!”

  “Take him down!”

  “You can do it, Blaze.”

  Whoosh! Boom!

Sakima couldn’t believe the way Caldre was fighting. He was bursting with pride. Holding his arms, he smiled as he moved closer. “Oh.” He had special plans for tonight, ones that would alter the future, their future. Sighing, he closed his eyes briefly. The concept that the curse was real was damning, much more than he’d realized.

  “Your boy is looking good!”

  “Excellent fight!”

  Boom!

“Yes!” The crowd was on their feet.

“Thank you. He’s the one to beat,” Sakima said as he waved, then slunk further into the background. He swallowed and placed one hand over his heart as he held the other out in the light. The color was barely any different but he knew. As he gripped his shirt, he felt the very faint heartbeat and laughed. Becoming human again should come with such joy. Instead he was filled with trepidation. He’d found the love of his life, a true mate. How sad. He’d be able to enjoy all things human again, including sickness and eventually death. How ironic life was. There was no going back, no becoming a vampire again. The curse had come full circle.

Sakima sighed as he watched the fight end, Caldre the victor by a TKO. As he walked forward, plastering a smile on his face, he stopped short. If the curse was real, then the course hadn’t been altered by William’s death. That meant…

Come to me. Come be the slave you once were. Come fulfill your very destiny and live out your life as my pet.

Hearing the same words spoken to him as a young boy, just moments before being taken away in chains, whipped until he was unconscious, he cringed. Tilting his head, the face of the monster who’d beaten, raped and taken him prisoner was in the stands. Master William.
