It was difficult to adjust his strategy to this new world, where without the threat of punishment by law people felt more free to do as they pleased and indulge their lust for power. Mack was sure, though, that it wasn't the last he had seen of this group. One way or another, he was going to dismantle them and show them that their way wasn't the best way to survive in the world. Willie and his family were sad to see them go, especially Margaret, who failed at holding back the tears. Elaine gave Grace a long hug, and as he watched them Mack realized that, for a man who prided himself in observing the things around him, he actually had missed a lot of what was going on.
Under a cloud of gloom, the three of them thanked Willie and his family for everything. Even though they always had intended to move on, it felt as though it was too soon, and they weren't ready to say goodbye yet. Luis found it difficult to tear himself away from Margaret, and even a friendly hug from Grace wasn't enough to soothe the ache in his soul. Although they had plenty of supplies, and had in some ways grown closer together for the experience on the farm, Mack couldn't help but feel as though he had let them down. At least the farm was still standing, though, and everyone was still alive. The group took one last look at the home they were leaving and embarked on their journey in silence, each of them reflecting on the things they had learned about themselves during their stay on the farm.
