It was very chilly inside my office.
“Hello there, Jill.” The colonel was sitting on the sofa. Winky was underneath it, shivering from the cold.
“Hi, Colonel. Have you had time to consider what we spoke about on the phone?”
“I have. In fact, Cilla and I spent most of last night discussing it. The business opportunity you mentioned is very different to the one we’d had in mind. We had thought maybe a tea room or coffee shop, but this Hauntings Unlimited business does sound quite intriguing.”
“Does that mean you’re interested?”
“Possibly, but first we’d like to speak to the people running the human world end of the business.”
“I’m sure that can be arranged.”
“Excellent. Assuming those discussions go well, I see no reason why we shouldn’t sign on the dotted line.”
“Excellent. That’s great news for all the ghosts who are already working in haunted houses in the human world. I’d also like you to meet Karen Coombes. She’s the one who brought me in on this in the first place. When I spoke to her yesterday, she was rather upset that Hauntings Unlimited might have to close. I’m sure she’ll be delighted to hear that you might step in and take over.”
“Do you have to bring all these ghosts into the office?” Winky said, after the colonel had left. “This place is like a freezer when they’re in here.”
“Sorry. How about I buy you a nice cat bed which you can snuggle up in?”
“I like that idea. Make it a double for when Peggy comes over.”
The pieces of the puzzle slowly start to fall into place for Jill in the penultimate book in this season:
