“Explain my lord, I…cannot fathom how your inner beast could want a human as mate,” Tristan was incredulous, and he had every right to be. During the four-year period, none of us had marked a human female as our mate.
“I saw her two weeks ago at a coffee shop in town. She was working, both making the coffee and serving customers. She is beautiful…ridiculously so and as soon as I set eyes on her, I knew she was mine,” I growled the last word, my inner tiger stirred with the need to posses its mate.
“Never have I had an incident where I lost control of my need to shift. I could not help it after I saw her; the first sighting took place moments after that; I was too close to town when it happened,” I admitted sullenly.
“Lord Safir, why have you not acted on your mating instincts then? Simply speak to her, she could not possibly turn you away compared to the other feeble human men in this town.” I shook my head in frustration.
“You don’t understand how she…crazes me. I can smell her scent even now and she is nowhere near. The urge to mate, to claim her becomes so all consuming that I shift if I do not have steadfast control over the tiger.” I downed the rest of my glass and poured another.
“After first seeing her, I’ve been visiting that coffee shop for two weeks straight. Just watching her, she never notices that I have become a regular visitor; she has not noticed that I watch her constantly. It is better this way though; this way I cannot hurt her. What if we spoke for hours and my need to have her grew so consuming that I shifted before her eyes? She is human, she wouldn’t understand and she would hate me. I would frighten her and I do not want that.”
“Safir, this is ludicrous; she is clearly your mate. She could not possibly turn you away. Put your insecurities aside and approach her, so that you can regain control over your instincts,” Tristan insisted.
She didn’t even know my name, yet in my days of visiting her place of work, I knew much about her.
“I cannot,” I did not mean to sound like an Alpha Commander, but Tristan wasn’t listening. “She is human; I would not dare force myself on her. Especially without her knowing what I truly am, she would not accept me and I would frighten her. It is as simple as that. I just need to regain my bearings and control the increased urge to shift,” I said with finality. Tristan fell silent and took a sip of his bourbon.
“I understand my lord. So if she were to accept you, would you then claim her fully as your mate?” Tristan’s question was tentative and curious.
“Perhaps, but I do not want to risk anything…like I said.” Tristan nodded and we finished our drinks while exchanging rather mundane conversation.
“I believe you can control your mating urges my lord. I have full faith in you,” Tristan said just before leaving. I gave him a swift nod and bid him farewell as he left.
I glanced around the empty foyer and beyond into the now empty family room and kitchen. I glanced at the time and thought that Arianna would be working by then, the sun had risen and she always worked in the mornings. I would pay her a visit…not that she’d notice me sitting in my corner table while I watched her.

Arianna was smiling at some human male who thought he could win her affections. She stood behind the counter, her usual vigil over the dining room, and she wore her usual uniform.
The khaki pants fit her snuggly as always, displaying the lovely curve of her hips, and when she turned, the even lovelier roundness of her full bottom.
The black café shirt she wore always drove me mad. It was less form fitting and I could just make out the curve of her breasts, yet I could not tell how full they were.
I wanted nothing more than to take her from behind that counter to my home…my bed. Where I could familiarize myself with her body as much as I pleased.
Most importantly, I wanted that feeble human male to stop making her smile. Anyway what was I thinking? It wasn’t like I could be her mate in a realistic scenario. She was painstakingly beautiful and men ought to go up to her to make her smile. Otherwise, they’d be fools.
I forced myself to look away from her. I needed to control this urge to be near her. If I were to truly control myself and cease my unprecedented shifting, then I simply had to start distancing myself from Arianna.
I stood abruptly and in my haste, spilled the black coffee I had ordered but never drank.
“Oh let me help you sir!” Arianna excused herself from the man at the counter and rushed over with paper towels and a spray bottle filled with blue liquid.
“Don’t worry about it…sir—um…” Arianna trailed off in her reassurances as she neared me and the mess I had caused. Her beautiful green eyes widened as she took in my size.
This was why we could never be with me. I could already sense her nervousness at our proximity. If she were reacting like this by simply taking in my more natural humanoid form, how would she react to seeing me morph into the tiger?
“I apologize; I was not paying attention. Let me clean it, you do not have to,” I said a bit awkwardly while I took the bottle and paper towels from her.
She had no time to react before I was bent and cleaning up the mess I had made. As I lowered in front of her, her delicious caramel scent hit me full on. The tiger roared for her and I could feel the numbing urge to shift threaten my conscious mind. I needed to get away from her.
I quickly cleaned up the mess and left the paper towels and spray bottle on the table before I threw away what I’d used and quickly left the café.
Once I was out in the fresh air, I took several deep breaths and continued retreating from the coffee shop and Arianna. Controlling the urge to shift was nearly impossible as I hurried to the group of trees.
Once I was out of the street’s view, I used my supernatural speed to run deeper into the forest. I finally allowed myself to morph into the beast that roared for Arianna.

As Tristan left Safir’s house and the warriors’ makeshift headquarters, he sent a text message to the other five soldiers. All apart from Lord Safir. The meeting would be concerning Safir, to discuss what Tristan had in mind to fix this ridiculous problem.
Tristan and Safir had been friends even before their squadron’s crash landing on that primitive planet. Safir had never let the trials of war affect his heart, whereas Tristan had been made more pragmatic and even more practical minded than their leader. Not that he had lost any respect for his friend and commander, sometimes Tristan had to remind Safir not to think with his heart and sense of morality.
Safir wouldn’t see things Tristan’s way and he had refused to simply make the human his mate. So Tristan would come to an agreement with the others and take care of the problem his way.
Tristan waited only ten minutes until the five other warriors gathered at his place, the one he had built for himself not ten miles away from Safir’s much grander home. Each warrior had their own home surrounding Safir’s place.
The tall, broad shouldered men quickly entered Tristan’s living room. All were still frustrated with last night’s meeting. Safir and his empty reassurances hadn’t satisfied them at all. Their commander could not even reassure himself that he would be able to control his mating urges.
“So why have you called us here Tristan?” Doran asked as they all settled in the living room. Tristan was quite nervous, as he had never betrayed Safir’s confidence before. After all, things were too sensitive to address.
“Our Lord Commander has confided in me the reason behind his ‘slip ups,’” Tristan glanced around the room at the five familiar faces of his fellow warriors.
“His reckless shifting is due to his mating instincts being awakened. He is losing control of the tiger as it recognizes a human female as Safir’s mate,” Tristan let that sink in around the room.
“So he has endangered us to the humans because of mating instincts?” Doran was instantly outraged.
“Why has he not marked the female yet?” The room grew hot as Doran’s inner dragon stirred from his an
ger. Tristan shrugged, truly unable to explain Safir’s unnecessary respect for the human race.
