Burton looked back at the guys. That wasn’t something she recalled. “A Treasury Bond? When does it mature?”

“Uh,” Larry sighed, adjusting his glasses. “Oh, soon. November, couple of years.”

“When was it issued?” she asked, as the three men behind her wondered what exactly was being discussed. She had a Master’s in Business Administration so she was the expert in the room.

Larry typed something and looked up at her with a hint of amusement. “Your birthday.”

“A thirty-year treasury bond?” Burton blurted with a half laugh. She turned back and looked at her trio with a huge grin. They all seemed a little confused.

“I understand the Treasury Department’s function and what they do, but please, you have to better explain what the hell you’re talking about!” Austin huffed, as Burton and her accountant looked gleefully at each other and the computer screen.

“In the 80s a thirty-year treasury bond issued would yield, what, about twelve percent a year?” she asked, glancing over her shoulder at Larry.

  “Twelve point seven five, yes.”

“And starting out with eighty million dollars?” she grinned, raising her brow.

“At maturity?” Larry chuckled, wiping his forehead. He looked about half ready to faint.

Connor, Ferguson, and Austin all leaned forward in anticipation.

  Epilogue

“Where the fuck have you been?”

“Hey, she’s here, isn’t she? Who cares where she’s been.”

Burton smiled at the always outgoing Agent Ellie Darby and always sensible Agent Jane George. Over the past few weeks they’d become quick friends, bonding over their hearings at the Department of Justice. They didn’t take the eight hour hearings all that seriously, but it was still a reality and cut into their work and private lives. There was a dead senator. Someone had to be blamed.

“Did you sweep the room?” Burton mumbled, raising her brow and eyeing the small, sparsely decorated room in the government building. They’d discovered a small listening device underneath the table two seconds after they’d met there on the first day of the inquiry. It was their job, after all.

“It’s clean,” Darby nodded, pulling out a small video screen. “And I set up eyes in the conference room. Whatever they decide, we should be able to make a break for it if things turn south. And I’m packing a silenced Glock 18 if anyone tries to stop us.”

“I’m not running away and we won’t be found responsible!” George sighed, trying to sound more optimistic than she felt. “And we aren’t killing anybody. They know we aren’t guilty. They probably would have sent someone like you in to take care of Senator Ford anyway.”

Darby gave a half shrug and looked back at Burton. “So, who’s speaking for you in today’s final statements?” She had her husband and boss speaking on her behalf. George had her boss at the DEA/ATF defending her. Burton hadn’t mentioned anyone yet, and from what she knew she didn’t have a husband or a boss.

Burton fought a grin as she looked at the small screen in her strawberry blonde friend’s hand and pointed.

“Is that who I think it is?” George frowned, leaning her head over.

“Shit,” Darby replied, shaking her head. “Marty Austin, huh?”

The former President of the United States had been working overtime for her that week. He was standing up for her at the DOJ hearings, he’d given a scathing testimony against Jon Wolinski at his trial, he’d agreed to her and Connor’s terms and had hired her, and finally, he’d done something she’d never have thought she’d ask him to do.

“He was our witness this morning,” she grinned, eyeing her friends.

  “What?” George smiled.

“You and Connor got married?” Darby squealed, thankful that now she wasn’t the only one in the group with a husband.

“At the courthouse,” she beamed, as the girls hugged her and admired her wedding band. She had told Connor not to get anything too sparkly. Sure, she was humble, but she mostly didn’t want to look like a show-off when she visited her new Child Advocates facility she’s commissioned on the outskirts of DC. All of the sweet kids from her experience were there, along with over thirty other children in need of a safe place to stay. She put a lot of money into it, and it made her happy to go and see how the kids were getting along. Connor loved it, too, which had been a fun discovery. The big bad Captain with a soft spot for infamous Russian descendants and small children.

“And you have to honeymoon at the DOJ,” George sighed dramatically, giving her a wink.

Someone knocked and said they were ready. The girls all eyed each other apprehensively. They weren’t all that worried, but it was still nerve racking to be judged in front of your peers. And if anyone disagreed with how they’d handled Senator Lilly Ford, the whole room might follow suit and crucify them. It was a lot to think about.

“Oh fine,” Darby finally said, breaking the tension and pulling out two small Glocks from her coat pockets. “Now we’ll all be armed.”

“Thanks,” Burton grinned, stuffing it into her boot under her pant leg. While she didn’t fully agree with the theory, she found that people tended to listen to her when she was holding a weapon.

“Excellent,” George nodded, shoving hers into the back waistband of her skirt suit.

Burton smiled at her two friends as they left the room and walked across the bare hallway of the DOJ. She really did pity the poor fool who would ever try and cross them. It hadn’t taken very long for the three of them to become a team.

They came to play. And when it came to Baylor Burton, she always came to win.
