The corners of Kemp’s mouth turned up. Of course! He started walking, limping towards her.
‘Daisy,’ he called. ‘Stop.’
She wiped her tears. ‘Why?’
‘I didn’t mean it. You know that ... I had to.’
‘But ... murder?’ she cried again. She wanted to punch him.
‘Because, Daisy, we’re all going to die—’
‘No, we’re not!’ she cried, her voice quivering. ‘We’re going to find the tablets – you’ll see.’
‘You won’t. There’s too much for you to do. Deep down you know it’s beyond you—’
‘Then we’ll die trying.’ She rubbed her eyes and faced him. ‘That’s all you need to know.’
‘Look,’ he said, ‘there was only ... only room for one of us. Me or Gus.’
‘What are you talking about?’
‘It’s the ghost. He can take only one other, to be a part of him. Soon there won’t be anyone left on this planet. Just a spirit, and me and well, there’s an arrangement. The winner can take one other. A girl. So it was a choice.’
Daisy glared at him icily. ‘You killed him, Kemp. You’re a bloody murderer.’
Kemp stared at the ground and wiped his bloody lips. Then he looked her in the eye. ‘You helped me, Daisy. That makes you complicit. So you are also a murderer.’
She reeled, stunned that he understood her actions too.
Kemp’s bloody face stared at her imploringly. He stepped forward. ‘You don’t understand. If Gus had won, he’d have taken Sue—’
‘But you won.’
‘Yeah,’ Kemp replied. ‘Because when I saw your eyes in the darkness of the rock where you were hiding, I realised I wanted you. I want you to come with me, Daisy – more than anything else. Nothing has ever felt so right.’
He moved in close.
Daisy noted the terrible beating he’d received. The mangled face, the deep burgundy cut across his forehead. She had a terrible urge to smack him and clenched her fists, but when he stretched his arms out to her, she reached out and took his hands.
‘Come with me, Daisy de Lowe.’
Daisy stared at him and swallowed.
‘Please?’ he implored. ‘I don’t want you to die.’
Her lips flickered and she squeezed his hand. ‘I can’t,’ she said. ‘It’s impossible.’
His face fell. ‘Look, you don’t have to come, you know, right away,’ he said, bowing his head.
‘I must go,’ she said, knowing she needed to be back at the cottage. She turned.
He thought quickly. ‘Daisy, your next task involves killing a serpent,’ he said, stopping her in her tracks. ‘By all accounts, it cannot lose—’
She hesitated. ‘Why not?’
‘Because it can be any reptile, big or small, with every power known to exist.’ He shuffled closer as she tried to edge away. ‘Listen to me,’ he said. ‘If you are near to the end, you must shout out for me. Call for me.’
‘Call you?’
‘Yes! If there’s time, I will come, I promise, and then all of this ... this craziness will be over. I swear it.’
The strange voice Daisy heard earlier rang out. ‘Time to go, boy, with or without her.’
Kemp leaned in quickly so that his breath touched her ear. ‘If you’re really, truly stuck, if you’re on your knees with nowhere else to go, there is one other thing you can do—’
‘Come on, boy, the light is growing, we must be away.’
Kemp winced and spoke with more urgency. ‘Say these three words out loud. You’ll feel a force field in front of you. Dive towards it — through it — thinking of me. You’ve got to trust me, Daisy de Lowe.’
Daisy cringed. ‘What words?’ she croaked.
He smiled and moved his cheek to hers, so that she could smell him and almost taste the matting blood on his cheek.
He whispered three words:
‘Dreamspinner. Dreamspinner. Dreamspinner.’
And then, in a flash, he turned and vanished into thin air.

James Erith was born in Suffolk in the UK in 1970. He travelled the world extensively and worked briefly as a journalist - amongst other things - in the nineties and naughties.
James moved to North Yorkshire where he lived between the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire Moors. It inspired him to use these beautiful areas as the location for the EDEN CHRONICLES series.
James is easily distracted by the sound of leather on willow. In 2013 he rowed across the English Channel and the length of the Thames to raise money for MND and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
