Satisfied they were not going to fight a battle, Weddle got impatient. He turned his horse to the side and swung down out of the saddle. “Well, if we are going to camp here for the night,” he announced, “I need to see about setting up camp.”

Denur nodded. “Right as usual, Weddle. We can talk over supper. I want to hear this story myself.” He dismounted as well and looked back toward the East Landly party. “General, will you join us?”

“Please call me Dax,” he said, then smiled a little ruefully. “I’m afraid it will be some time before I can join you on the ground. I wasn’t able to stay in the saddle by myself. I’m afraid I’m tied onto my horse.”

Weddle smiled up at his old roommate. “You always do what you have to do, don’t you, Dax?” He laughed at an old memory. “Just like that time you tied the guidon to a mop handle with your boot laces after you broke the staff trying to vault with it?”

Dax smiled at him, and Weddle remembered the man’s help and generosity from years ago. “Oh, I heard about it from Renshau later,” Dax replied, “but it got us through the regimental review with only one deduction.”

Weddle stepped closer to Dax’s horse. “What can I do to help you get down? You know I don’t like to be late for supper.”

This is the end of King’s Dragon but not the end of Dax’s adventures. The Chronicles of the Dragon-Bound continue in King’s Crown.
