Chapter 1
Lieutenant Jenkins was pinned down. The Earth ships had strafed his position a few minutes ago and there were dead and dying troops all around him. He ducked his head as a volley of projectiles ricocheted off the window frame he was hiding behind.
“Lieutenant Jenkins!” He looked over his shoulder. One of the sergeants was crawling across the debris strewn floor towards him.
“Stay low, Sergeant.” Crouching down on his knees he turned toward the man.
“Sir, we’ve been ordered to hold at all costs.” The sergeant looked haggard and worn. A fine trickle of blood crept down his forehead.
“What? That’s insane! Half the regiment got wiped out by that last attack.”
“Sir, we told them that, and they insisted! The Earth ships dropped four divisions on us. They are barely holding onto the main city. They did promise to send us some reinforcements as soon as they can. We are to hold, Sir.”
“Damn. OK. Round up as many men as you can. We will use this house as our main position and defend from here. Get the men to start digging in!” The sergeant nodded his head and began crawling his way back to the CP area.
A screaming cry from above made the lieutenant flinch and glance up. Another of those damned Earth bombers was making a run. He ducked behind the house’s window as fusion bomblets peppered the regiments’ former position. His men were digging in around the house at a frantic pace. He gazed out the shattered window at the once fine neighborhood. This house sat on a small overlook making it both an excellent OP and the best available defensible position. The houses surrounding this once magnificent mansion were blasted and smoking. It was sheer luck that any of his command was still alive. All he could do was mentally curse both his superiors and the damned Cabal that led them. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Earth was supposed to help them...
Sixteen hours earlier...
“Does everyone understand their orders?” Major Frederick Benteen was on his last nerve. For some reason, the Seventh Regiment was not the smartest on the planet. You would think with all the purges lately someone in his command would have something that resembled a brain. Most of the officers were nodding their heads. But the ones in the front still seemed to have questions. Taking a deep breath the Fredrick called on one of the lieutenants.
“Lieutenant Raymond, what is your question?”
“Sir, won’t we be exposed on the civilian highway? I understand the need to assemble at the landing fields, but what if they attack us, Sir?”
“Attack us? Lieutenant Raymond weren’t you paying any attention to anything? This is the Earth fleet! We built this Empire for them. They are here to bring us into the fold. The former Empire of Man is now the Earth Empire. Finally we’ll have peace with the galaxy under the control of the UN. It’s what we have spent our whole lives working for. Now, once again: Our division has been selected to meet the ships as they land. The other three planetary divisions are to secure our bases and prepare for inspection. Command has been instructed by the Earth Admiral Alpha 222 to have all troops lined up and ready to receive review. We assume this will be done from space or LEO. We all need to look our best.”
Seeing a different officer raise their hand he pointed at them. “Captain Nine, did you have something to say?”
“Yes, Sir. Are we going to this event armed? Our troops will look better with arms at attention than without.”
The Major thought about that for a moment. Command had not said yea or nay about arms. “Approved. Make sure they clean them. I want no greasy weapons for this review. Is that understood?”
The Captain nodded his understanding. Command Sergeant Major Julie Velasquez sat at the back of the room. She made a note on her tablet and sent instructions to all the noncoms in the regiment to issue weapons and ammo. Better to be safe. She was a supporter of the Cabal but was not completely trusting of Earth. Her grandparents were some of the forced immigrants and didn’t survive the trip. But she dared not voice any objection. They would kill her outright. Better to hide in the shadows.
“Good. Now get your troops moving! ETA on the Earth fleet is less than three hours from now.” The Major smiled to himself. This was it! It was finally time to be rewarded for all the hard work and subterfuge.
The officers scattered to get the men and women in their respective commands up and ready. The airtrucks were standing by and loaded. All around the planet similar events were taking place.
In many cases the troops lining up didn’t have weapons at all.

Miguel 009 sat inside the command center watching the orbital tracks of the enormous Earth Fleet. They had dropped out of jump a few hours ago. The first group had set off every alarm and alert on the planet. At first the New Imperial forces assumed it was a League attack. As the ships continued to arrive they assumed it must be Earth. Mars, even with their hidden fleet didn’t have a thousand ships. It was all he could do to not rub his hands together in anticipation. With this many ships they could roll right over those that opposed them and conquer the whole galaxy. It would be so nice to go home. He missed the sights and smells of Earth so very much.
“Sir, we are receiving a message on the Earth frequency!”
“Put it up on the screen. Everyone look alive!”
The main screen lit up showing the deck of a large ship. Ship’s personnel could be seen moving about and working. Many in the command center began to murmur when they noticed that the people all had the same faces. The rumors were true. Clones!
“Quiet down or face the consequences!” Miguel 009 stared at the screen. They were not all the same face. Here and there were clones in different colored uniforms and faces. A stern looking man stepped into view.
“My name is Alpha 222, who am I addressing?”
“Sir, my name is Miguel 009; I rule here. I present you with the new Earth Empire.”
“Miguel. Yes. I was informed that you are the leader of the Cabal. I will be landing some peacekeeping troops in a few hours. I would like for several things to be ready for us at that time. We would like for your naval vessels to stand down and prepare to be boarded. We will inspect them first then land our ground inspection teams. I need your forces to be lined up and ready to stand in review. The Program sends its regards and wishes for you and those with you to reap the rewards you have been promised.”
Miguel smiled at that. “I assume that Johann 009 managed to reach you with our gathered intelligence.”
“Yes. The Gen Mod Johann was well received by my brethren on the Colossus. Unfortunately he was terminated in the cowardly attack by Mars. It was only sheer luck that the brave captains of a segment of our fleet managed to break free and bring the information back to Earth. Mars will be dealt with soon, I promise you.”
“We had wondered, when Johann failed to respond. All will be done as you ask. Are there any special instructions for me from the Program?”
Alpha 222 glanced off-screen at someone. He looked back and smiled. “I was not given anything. But I will send to Earth and ask. Was there something specific?”
/>
Miguel frowned. His memory was still pretty clear of the meeting with the Program’s leaders over a century ago. Special codes were to be given as a failsafe. There was only one way to be sure. “Can you pass a message to General Allen? He was supposed to give me specific code words.”
It was Alpha 222s turn to frown. He looked off-screen again. “General Allen? I am afraid you have me there. We don’t have a General Allen in the service. Our ground command was abolished over a century ago.”
“General Jeremy Allen?” At the Alpha’s shake of the head Miguel knew something was wrong. Warily, he looked back up at the screen. “We will begin preparations. I have already issued orders to the fleet to stand down.”
“Good. We will see you on the ground in a few hours then.” The screen went dark. Miguel looked at his fellow Cabal leaders.
“We have a problem.”

Zeta 069 looked over at his commander again. The twisted interrogator looked troubled. “Sir, I think he suspects.”
“What can he know? All of our people were either killed in Mars orbit or at the battle in the New Texas system. The suicide triggers will have taken care of any survivors. He can’t know anything.”
“It’s possible that the human Program leaders left some sort of code system in place. General Jeremy Allen was the name of one of the early human leaders. Our records are very spotty when it comes to any orders he may have given to the Gen Mods. When this Miguel’s ship left Earth the human leaders were already in rebellion with the Program’s goals. They set this Cabal up in order for them to rule. Not us.”
“If he was human, he would have been long gone by now. They are so fragile and break very easily.” The Alpha smiled at the thought of breaking humans.
“They were the first recipients of the treatments that were applied to the Gen Mods. If their rebellion had succeeded, they might still survive.”
“What happened to this General Allen?”
The Zeta smiled. He had been a witness to history. “It was part of the last battle we had with the human army. Sort of their last gasp. The Gen-Mods and we few clones chased them halfway across the North American continent. They went to ground at a former human city called Austin. The General and his fellow traitors were hold up in heavily armored bunkers below the former State Capitol in that city. We hit it with an orbital strike then followed up with a firebomb attack that made Dresden look like a backyard barbecue. Any survivors were rooted out and executed.”
“Austin? Dresden? Where are those?” The Alpha looked confused.
“They aren’t there anymore so don’t worry about it, Sir. The answer to your question is that he was killed. Should I make extra arrangements in case they suspect?”
“No. The plan will proceed as planned. Activate the Jamming system and signal our boarding squads. It is time to take what is rightfully ours.”
The orders were given and small craft began leaving the Earth ships. Hundreds began streaming toward the Space station and the half dozen Imperial ships circling the planet.
~~~~
Admiral Keller stood in the command center of the Space station. He had been witness to the transmission from the Earth fleet. On a personal level he was ready for them to get here. His entire life had been about this moment. “Is the honor guard prepared?”
“Sir, I have sent my very best men to take care of it. They have orders to offer every courtesy.”
“Good work, Captain Libby. You will go far with me if you continue this way.”
“Thank you, Sir!” Captain Libby smiled. It was incredibly hard to get ahead under “Old Iron-pants.” She was working towards becoming the first new female Admiral and gaining this cranky old man’s support was crucial.
“Make sure your man knows to send their commanders to me. I will turn the station over to them personally.”
“Sir.” She saluted and returned to her station. Everything had better be perfect or heads would roll down there...
~~~~
Watching through the view-ports, the greeting party waited for the shuttles to land and the hangar to re-seal before lining up as an honor guard. The Earth shuttles were bigger than the ones the Empire used. Three of the large ones had landed and as the hatches began to open the commander of the party called the men to attention. It was the last order he would ever give.
Firing in unison the boarding troops blew large holes through all the greeters.
“Sir, we are on board. No resistance.”
“Excellent. Save any Gen Mods you find for me. You may terminate the rest; they’re only humans, after all.”
Delta team leader 117 smiled. His troops were chomping at the bit to go all out. Shipboard duty was boring. “The order is given. Unleash the dogs of war! No quarter is to be given. Enjoy yourselves. Bring any surviving Gen Mods to the hangar deck.”
The black clad troops howled with glee and charged out of the hangar area. The screams of their victims could immediately be heard.
~~~~
“Admiral, we have lost comms inside the station! External comms are down too, Sir!”
“What! Now? Damn them. Contact engineering and get those lazy bastards to work! Don’t they know we have important visitors?” The old Admiral stomped over to the communication console and gave it a swift kick.
Rolling her eyes at the Admiral’s actions, Captain Libby took a deep breath and spoke. “Admiral Keller, I will send runners down to pass the message. It will be faster.”
“Excellent idea, Captain. Make it so.” Trying not to smile, the Captain grabbed the entire communications section and dispersed them to the various decks to pass the word.
Ensign Seth was the first out the door to the emergency stairwell. He knew the others would take the lifts. He wanted to be the first to pass the messages and take the credit. He had watched how the Captain worked the Admiral.
He had only just set foot on the stairs when he heard screams echoing up. Freezing in place he peered over the edge and looked down. Black forms were rapidly climbing the stairs. The thunder of their footsteps drowned out the screams. Eyes wide with fright he turned back and ran toward the command center.
The frantic ensign was stopped by the Imperial Marine at the door. He gestured and tried to spit out what he had heard. Captain Libby noticed the commotion and went to stop it before the Admiral noticed.
“Ensign! Why are you not below?”
“Captain! Thank the gods! We have to run, they are coming!”
“Who is coming? By the Seal what is your problem?”
“I went down the stairs and heard screams echoing up from below. I looked and hundreds of monsters were running up the stairs!”
The Captain looked at the gibbering ensign with disdain. She motioned to the Marine. “Check it out.”
The Marine checked his sidearm and stepped through the door. The Captain heard the sound of a shot and a loud crash! She tried to close the door but was not strong enough. A black uniformed arm came through the gap in the door and slammed it open. The ensign was thrown to the deck as black-clad troops rushed through the door.
“What is the meaning of this intrusion!” Admiral Keller saw the troops and began yelling.
The first Delta through the door began shooting at the command crew. It was like shooting targets on the range. The Imperial navy officers just stood there in shock. Admiral Keller took a head shot that put an end to him. Captain Libby barely had time to stand before she was put down.
“Command Center is secure. Search the upper decks!” More of the Delta troops ran up the stairs to the few upper levels. The rest rounded up the few surviving human crewman. It was time to play. Their screams joined those of the rest of the station’s crew.
The same thing was happening on every ship in orbit. Black clad Delta troops were killing every human on board.
~~~~
“Sir, we have lost contact with the Station and we seem to be jammed.”
Miguel 009 grimaced. He had hoped that
he was wrong. “Contact the Lone Starr. It’s at the starport. Tell them to make ready to depart, code Zeta.”
He glanced at the orbital plot. Hundreds of additional craft were launching from the Earth ships. “Send orders to the honor parties to break out weapons. This is an invasion not a landing party.”
The command crew just stared at him in shock. “Dammit! Do as I say. Send those orders.”
Miguel stormed out of the center and began to run. Maybe he could get to the ship before it was too late...
Chapter 2
“What do you mean changed? How can they change our orders now? The fleet is landing and we need to greet them...”
