I hoped it wasn’t something embarrassing I’d let slip during the heat of the moment, because I wasn’t sure I’d feel comfortable saying a lot of things I had before.
“When you said you were mine.” His lips brushed against my ear.
My heart kick-started in my chest at the reminder. Not because I hadn’t meant it, but because of the truth within those simple words. It sang to every part of me. It sang to my soul.
“I’m yours,” I whispered.
“Say it again,” he demanded.
I twisted around in his arms so that I was facing him. My eyes locked with his and I noticed how bright they were this time, reminding me of honey. “I’m yours.”
“You don’t mind the other side of me?” Worry darkened the color of his eyes. I wanted the brightness back. I wanted the smile to return to his face.
“No.” I shook my head. I didn’t. It was a part of him. Something that made him who he was. I liked who he was. In fact, I thought I might even be on the verge of loving who he was. Maybe it was too soon, and maybe it wasn’t. After all, there were no rules when it came to matters of the heart. “I’m yours and you’re mine.”
“Good God, yes.” He crushed his lips against mine, as though he were sealing the words to his soul with some sort of shifter magic. “We belong to each other.”
Silas rolled on top of me, never moving his mouth from mine, and his hand began inching its way toward my breast. Sparks shot through me from his touch. It was unlike anything I’d ever felt before.
“Feel that?” he asked between kisses.
“Yes,” I breathed.
“You are mine. The chemistry between a shifter and his mate doesn’t lie.”
The word mate jolted my brain. It didn’t scare me—it intrigued me, because I knew it to be true. It was why I’d had such a strong physical reaction to him the first time I saw him. It was why I’d had all those crazy dreams about him during the week I avoided him. It was why I’d felt more familiar and comfortable with him than any man I’d ever been with. Hell, it quite possibly could have been why I’d decided to come to this little town.
“I guess we aren’t going to get something to eat anytime soon, are we?” I asked with a chuckle when he slipped his hand between us and the pad of his fingers began stroking along my slick center.
“Food can wait, don’t you think?”
I kissed along his neck and smoothed my hands across his muscular back. “Definitely.”
I was right where I needed to be, wrapped in Silas’s arms again. Finally.
