The news hit Theo with such force he had to sit back down.
“The machine at Playland?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “The one that told my fortune?”
“Aye,” Everett said. “It looks as though something is definitely amiss there.”
“ ‘Life as you know it will end on your fourteenth birthday,’ ” Theo muttered numbly. He had every word of his fortune memorized. “So I really am in trouble. I’m not sure if I’m glad you found the book, or really, really scared.”
I took the black book from Lu and flipped through a few pages. There was a story there. A new story.
Only this one was about my friends.
