Drea nodded. "Since we don't know how many others are aware of the Essence Divider's vulnerability, we'll have to post guards here to keep anyone else from carrying out the Lord Paladin's plans. Fortunately there aren't many like you, but we'll still have to be wary. By the way, I'm not saying you have to... but would you be interested in being trained to better use your gifts? We have mages in our ranks, though none able to use the other races' disciplines, who could help you hone them."
He fell briefly silent, then turned to Sam. "What do you think?"
"I can't make that decision for you." She grinned. "But if you want to do it, I'd be glad to train as a Guardian Knight with an old friend at my side."
"So you don't plan on going back to Berilim?" Vincent asked, frowning. "Director Jon and his folks will miss you."
She looked down. She did love them, as well as feeling she owed a debt to them for giving her a home for the years since her father's death. It worried her that they might struggle without her help at the playhouse, especially if Eli left too. "I'm so grateful to them and you for what you all did for me. If any of you ever need help, just ask and I'll do my best to give it. But I don't think the path of an actor is right in the long term for me. I've found my calling it seems, and it's time for me to move on." She put a hand on his shoulder. "You go back, and give the others my well wishes. I know your dream is in acting, so you shouldn't become a warrior just to follow me."
"When you put it that way, I don't see much I can argue with. And Eli?"
"I haven't decided yet," the younger boy said. "Do I have to now, or how much time do I have?"
Drea regarded them with a grin. "Whether or not you want training, you'll all have to stay a little while at least until you've given your testimony against the Paladins. That includes you, Vincent."
"That's not a bad thing," he said after a moment. "I'll be happy to have time to catch up with Eli, and hope I can help him figure out what the best way forward is for him."
Finishing up the wrapping of Sam's wounds with help from Cordy, Drea stood. "Shall we go? Lady Cordy looks like she's getting ready to complain about how hot it is."
"Well, it is hot," Cordy replied defensively. "You guys ready?"
Sam and her friends helped each other up, she and Vincent grimacing from their injuries. Despite that, she smiled once the pain subsided enough for her to be able. Not only had the weight of Eli's peril been lifted off her, she finally realized her purpose. She would take up the axe—or more like continue wielding it—and defend humanity from the evils that threatened it from within or without. She walked after Drea and Cordy for the outside, the future promising before her.

It was the glint of sun off steel that caught her eye. Rose stopped, basket of freshly picked herbs in hand, and stared into the Whit family's barn door through which she had seen that misplaced sliver of light. While metal was common enough on a farm, most farming tools were made of dull iron, and Rose had only seen light reflected so sharply off honed steel—like a sword blade. Inside the barn, she thought she glimpsed a bulky shape, moving with stealth and speed. A thief?
