Zed's World (Book 2): Roads Less Traveled Page 17

by Baker, Rich

“What did all of that mean?” Natalie asks.

“Where was he? Isn’t Washington overrun too?” Annie says.

“He’s in Area 51,” Keith says. “Safe in the desert with the aliens. Maybe that’s what started all this: aliens!”

“You’re an idiot,” Danielle says without a hint of humor.

“Okay, enough,” Kyle says. “He’s probably in NORAD, under Cheyenne Mountain, or still on Air Force One. I think they can keep that thing in the air for weeks. Anyway, that’s not important. Natalie, you asked what that meant. The way I see it, it didn’t mean anything. We were prepared to hole up here for a few weeks until Toni’s healed and can travel, and that just reinforces that’s what we need to do.”

“Agreed,” Marc says. “We’ve got food enough to last a while, we’re safe and secure here, and I’ve brought some of my equipment so as long as the Internet stays intact, I can get us information about what’s happening in the world. In fact, I can get information for a while after the ‘net’ goes down.” He pantomimes typing to underscore his point.

“Okay. So we need to get the perishable food put away, sort out living arrangements, job duties, et cetera,” Kyle says. “And we wait out those things out there. The zombies or whatever they are.”

  “Zeds,” Ben says.

  “What?” Andy asks.

“Zeds. It's Canadian for ‘Z’. Zed is easier to say than zombie.”

Kyle considers this for a second.

“I like it,” he says. “Let’s get to it, kids. It’s Zed’s World now. We just live in it, and we have work to do.”

  About The Author

Rich Baker traces his love of zombies back to the Dan O’Bannon movie Return of the Living Dead, which was his first introduction to the genre. He was hooked, devouring any movies or books he could get his hands on. Reality and a well-paying day job kept his passion for writing at bay until he met and spoke with a few writers who were writing apocalyptic zombie fiction, and he put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as it were).

Writing Zed’s World has been a fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Rich, and the feedback and customer reviews have been inspiring. Rich set out to write a story that he, himself, would want to read, and finding that others want to go along on this ride is a humbling thing. Thank you, each and every one of you, for investing your time and treasure in this universe he’s created. It’s Zed’s World: we just live in it.

Zed’s World will return soon with another installment, due out in late 2016.
