Strange Lake Falls Witch Page 8

Granny was awake now and turned to look at Cat. The shock, fear, and pain in her face reflected what Cat felt herself. Her neck was hurting badly from the weight of her body, which was dangling from the vampire’s grip.

“You would think simply kicking you and Mabel out of the coven and the town would be enough. It wasn’t. The others grew scared of me and packed up and left town, too. I was finally a leader but had no coven.”

So that’s why months had lapsed between their departure from their home and the first attack. She didn’t blame the others for leaving. Geraldine had finally lost all sense.

“For my vengeance, I’m going to have my vampire lover strangle you slowly so that Mabel can watch you die. Then I will kill her. I may not have a coven for the full moon, but I can drain her powers and use them to enhance the charm of my own dwindling powers. That should help them last until the next big power surge event.”

At this point, Cat was only half-listening to Geraldine’s rant. Howling in the distance that had caught her attention began to grow closer. She watched the vampire and saw that he, too, heard the howling, but he didn’t say anything. The vampire might kill her, but it wouldn’t be done willingly. The moon was bright out tonight and its reflection caught on the medallion the vampire wore.

“Did you hear that? It’s the wolves. They’re coming. We’re going to have to kill the girl and take Mabel with us until I have time to drain her powers. Kill the girl!”

At that moment, the wolves broke free of the woods into the opening of the park. The vampire was fighting the order to kill her but his grip started to tighten. This was it — her only chance.

She reached her hand between their bodies and struggled to get the medallion. She managed to catch it in her grasp, and then she pulled it toward her to get a handhold on the chain.

Geraldine concentrated on the wolves. She stepped forward and held up her hand. “Invisibilis murum.”

Cat could hear the wolves whining and howling as they hit the invisible wall that Geraldine put up. She glanced to the side and saw Jay throwing his furry body against the wall. He was going to hurt himself. Enough of this.

She yanked down as hard as she could and the chain finally gave way. She dropped the medallion to the ground. She soon followed as the vampire, now free from the spell, released her and turned his fury on Geraldine.

Cat crawled over to Granny and pulled her into her arms. She lifted her hand toward the wolf pack. Her voice croaked as she tried to speak. “Remove murum.”

The invisible wall fell away and the wolves came barreling forward, ready to fight the witch who was already using every spell she could think of to keep the crazed vampire from getting to her.

Cat untied Granny and removed the gag in her mouth. “Are you okay?”

Granny hugged her with her frail arms. “I was so scared that she would succeed in killing you.”

“I’m hard to kill.” She tried to use a joking tone, but it didn’t work. She looked over and saw that the vampire had his fangs in Geraldine’s neck and was draining her of her blood. She couldn’t feel any pity for the other woman.

Suddenly she felt a nose at her neck. She turned to hug the furry neck of Jay in wolf form. “Hi, baby. I’m glad you’re here.”

One minute she was holding onto a wolf neck, and the next thing she knew, she was being pulled onto the lap of a very angry and very naked Jay in human form.

  *****

“I swear, Cat, you are going to give me a heart attack! I was trying to keep you safe and you just disappeared. You can’t ever do that again!”

“I’m sorry, honey, I didn’t have a choice. If I didn’t do what Geraldine said, she would have killed Granny.”

Jay held her to him and inhaled her scent. “God, I almost lost you...forever. That is unacceptable to me.” He pulled back and looked at the bruises on her neck and growled. He placed her back on the ground and stood up.

  “Where’s the vampire?”

“Wait, Jay, he was being controlled.” She motioned for Granny to stay seated as she got to her feet and moved around him to look at the werewolves and vampires surrounding the vampire who had just killed Geraldine. The vampire was breathing heavy and his eyes looked wild.

Adrian and the sentinel were there inside the circle, trying to get the vampire to calm down.

She reached for Jay’s arm. “Please don’t hurt him. He couldn’t help what he was doing.”

The wild vampire heard what she said and reacted immediately. His fangs retreated and he fell to his knees. “Kill me...I deserve to die.”

Cat’s heart actually hurt for the vampire. The sentinel walked toward him and put his hand on his shoulder. “You will explain what happened to the council. They will decide your fate.”

The librarian, Alice, came up to them, breathing hard. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, thank you for send Jay in the right direction.”

Alice waved off the thanks as she walked with her over to help get Granny up to her feet.

Granny hugged her. “That is more adventure than an old woman like me can handle.”

Adrian came over. “Are you both all right?”

“Yes, you guys arrived just in time.”

“It seems you did not need our help. Jay, you have one incredible mate.”

“I do. Thank you for coming.”

“Of course I came. Mabel is my longtime friend.” He turned to Mabel, “I can carry you home so that you don’t have to walk.

Granny shoved her way to him. “You don’t have to offer twice.”

Adrian chuckled as he lifted her easily into his arms. Then they were gone as Adrian took off at a steady pace.

Cat stood with Jay and Alice as the vampire sentinel Kincaide walked past them with the poor vampire Leopold. She didn’t know what was going to happen to him, but maybe she could speak before the council.

“I need to get you home,” Jay told her as he lifted her into his arms.

She glanced over his shoulder at Alice. “Are you going to be okay?”

Alice nodded trying not to look down at Jay’s naked ass. “Yes. I’ll have one of the wolves escort me back. I’m glad you’re okay.”

“Me, too,” she replied, resting her head on Jay’s shoulder. She was feeling really tired all of a sudden.

  “Oh...Cat!” Alice yelled out.

Jay turned so that Cat could look over at the other woman. “Yeah?”

“The spell you cast — where I hear and see what you do — how long will that last?”

“I’m not sure. A few hours or a few days.”

  “Come mate, we’re going home.”

That was the second time she had been referred to as his mate, and it sounded right. “I love you, Jay.”

  “I love you, too.”

  Epilogue

  Two weeks later

Cat sat in a semicircle along with their new initiates. Everyone wore clothing made with natural fibers; their hair was unrestricted, flowing free, and they wore no makeup or perfume. Someone had asked Granny James why they weren’t going to the ceremony naked. Granny had explained that nudity wasn’t necessary as long as they could remain as close to nature as possible. A sense of anticipation and excitement filled the air around them as Granny recited the words for the blue moon ceremony.

“Hyacintho luna...blue moon. Luna potentior...powerful moon. Imber nobis...shower us. Apud magicae...with magic.”

The rest of the group chanted and then the fire they had in the middle of their circle seemed to burn hotter and brighter. Its heat reached her and she felt it all the way to her toes. The moon that had been normal to the human eye suddenly glowed a beautiful blue and it beamed down on them, its soft light touching each of the witches.

Cat felt the power in her rise up and it filled every corner inside her. It was amazing how everything that she felt was missing growing up, how she couldn’t always tap into her powers or use them easily, suddenly clicked into place. The ceremony itself only last
ed a few minutes but she knew the lasting effects would remain with her for the rest of her life.

As the moon’s blue glow faded back to its natural white glow, she heard a wolf howl in the distance. Not just any wolf — her wolf, her Jay. He refused to leave her unprotected even though she was safe from Geraldine and the crazy vampire.

The vampire, Leopold, had drained Geraldine completely. He was taken before the vampire council and had to answer for the crimes of killing two people, the truck driver and Geraldine, and for attempted murder. She submitted her testimony that the vampire had been under a spell to do the witch’s bidding. Adrian told her that because of that testimony, the vampire would suffer a lesser punishment for his deeds.

She wasn’t sure that pleased her or not, but her grandmother felt partly responsible for all of the trouble Geraldine had brought to the community, so if it helped that guilt, it was worth it. Cat didn’t expect to ever see the vampire again and that was fine by her.

“That was amazing!” Alice said as she stood up and brushed the dirt from her pants.

The doctor stood up frowning. “It was, but I am kind of disappointed that we didn’t have to be naked.” He eyed Alice, making the shy girl blush.

“Shut up, Doc, I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of naked bodies in your profession.”

He teased her. “None as cute as a shy librarian.”

Cat helped old Mrs. Sanders stand up. “Well, if Brandon wants to see a naked body, I’m more than willing.”

Brandon tried to disguise his horror, which made Cat and Alice giggle. Mr. Tate stepped between them. “If anyone sees you naked, Irene, it’s going to be me.” For effect, he smacked her on her ass.

“My eyes…I can’t unsee that.” Brandon rubbed them as he chuckled.

Cat smiled looking at the small but close coven. They had really bonded over the past few weeks. Jay’s howl interrupted her thoughts.

Granny came over and hugged her. “Go, your wolf mate is waiting for you.”

She kissed Granny’s cheek. “I’ll see you later this evening!”

Cat sprinted off in the direction where the howling had come from. She felt energized and excited. It was dark, but the bright light from moon was showing her the way. She sensed Jay was near. The coven had grown closer, but so had the bond she and Jay shared. He would claim her before the pack soon and turn her into a werewolf with his alpha’s blessing.

After speaking with the werewolf council, it was discovered that witches could turn werewolf without losing their power. Jay was more excited about that than Cat because it meant that he would not lose her to old age. Cat was looking forward to being able to run as a wolf. She had never been an athletic person, so to run and jump with grace like a wolf was something she really wanted. Most of all, she wanted to be tied to Jay in every way possible.

She smiled as she climbed a fallen log and jumped into the air without a care. Jay’s strong arms reached out and caught her easily, just like she knew he would.

  “Gotcha!”

She giggled as Jay spun her around in circles, holding her close to him.

“Are you all done with your witchy stuff?”

“Yes. I see you’re naked again.” She glanced down as he lowered her to her feet. His cock was hard and stiff and waving at her like a welcoming flag.

“As you will be shortly,” he promised as he began pulling at her clothes to remove them. She helped him by raising her arms and letting him. She would let him do anything. That’s how much she loved him.

  “Jay?”

  “Yes, my mate?”

“I want to have your baby.”

He stopped unbuttoning her jeans and looked into her eyes. “I thought you wanted to wait until after we’ve had a few years together.”

“I did, but...after I am turned into a werewolf, I want to start a family with you. Granny is getting older and she has not stopped talking to me about hearing the pitter-patter of little wolfy paws in the cabin. I look at you and your brother and can almost picture a little boy or little girl with your eyes. I long to hold our baby in my arms.”

He cupped her face and gently kissed her lips. “I couldn’t imagine anything more perfect to express how I feel about you than having you carrying our child. I love you, my little Cat.”

She threw her arms around his neck, feeling happier than she had ever felt in her life. It was all due to this man in front of her, her mate. “I love you, too, my wolfman.”

  ******

Finally! Alice was able to close her eyes and not see through Cat’s eyes. The first few days after Cat and her grandmother had been snatched by the vampire and the crazy witch named Geraldine, Alice had suffered the effects of the spell that Cat had cast on her. She couldn’t close her eyes without seeing what Cat saw or hearing what Cat heard.

It would have been fine if it was just Cat she saw. That first night she closed her eyes and caught sight of a sexy naked werewolf making love to his mate. It wasn’t just during the night, the damn spell worked twenty-four seven. She now knew just how randy a mated werewolf could be — coming home in the middle of the day to have quickies, morning action, and all-night love fests. It was hard to even be in the same room as the werewolf and hear his husky voice without feeling shivers down her spine. It was wrong to be turned on by another woman’s man. She needed time and space to get over the feelings that had begun to stir inside her. With the spell finally done, she would have that time.

Closing her eyes and snuggling her pillow, she was free of thinking about the werewolf, and in his place was a sexy, dark, and mysterious man...with fangs. Those fangs gleamed in the moonlight and seemed to be getting closer and closer. She felt a cool breath on her neck right before those fangs pierced her flesh.

  “Oh, God.”

A male’s voice answered in her head. “Not quite.”
