DESTINY'S EMBRACE Page 26

by Suzanne Elizabeth

Tess blinked. She spun in a tight circle. She was on her feet, outside, in the middle of nowhere. She still had the candlestick gripped tightly in her clammy hands, but now the sun was bright and hot on her face, and dust was tickling her nose.

Terrified, she jerked her head left to right, trying to figure out what had just happened. She was standing on a dirt road, surrounded by wheat fields. She curled her toes into the packed earth beneath her bare feet. A warm wind sifted through her hair. Had she been knocked unconscious and kept that way for days, until finally being released on some backwoods road halfway across the country? If that were the case, then why was her nose still stuffed from her cold? Why was the candlestick still gripped in her hands?

She spotted a weathered, wooden sign, and leaned closer to read it.

  SWEET BRIAR

  2 MILES

A low, persistent rumble sounded from behind her and she turned to see a herd of enormous black horses bearing down on her like some crazy scene out of Ben Hur. She opened her mouth to scream, but her scratchy voice failed her.

Hoofs clamored. Dust churned. Gleaming black bodies thundered.

Tess was too stunned to move.
