“I said to order them,” she encouraged. “I don’t want to wait,” she said breathlessly as her lips followed her fingertips. Having Fey home at night was so nice. With the rush of spring work over, many of her patients were back in the hills, living off the land. Those living closer were the only ones she saw.
Fey clicked on the buy now button, filling out the information for her credit card as well as the medical information they required for Allyssa before putting in their shipping address. They would deliver the vials to the ranch. It wasn’t much different than when her clients ordered sperm for their prize heifers or horses, and she hoped she wouldn’t make that comparison when she implanted it in Allyssa’s uterus. Fortunately, they had a cryo-tank to store such things. Once the credit card payment went through, she printed out the receipt and turned off the computer, taking her wife in her arms. “And now, you will have to pay the penalty for teasing me,” she told her, pulling her across the desk to take her then and there.
Surprised, Allyssa willingly submitted, thrilled to feel her desire rising instantaneously as she pulled Fey against her. Kissing her passionately, she loved the feel of Fey’s muscular body against her own. When Fey quickly reached into her jeans, she helped to unbutton and unzip them, so her wife could access her.
“Oh, my God,” she gasped as Fey searched for and found the wetness she couldn’t hold back. She could feel pencils and a keyboard digging into her shoulders, but she didn’t care. She wanted…no, she needed to finish this impulsive thing Fey had started. As Fey pressed inside, Allyssa felt things building, but she also felt another pressure, and embarrassed, she suddenly started to withdraw.
“What’s wrong? Am I hurting you?” Fey asked, immediately concerned. She stopped her hand.
“No, don’t stop…” she gasped, “It’s just,” she tried to turn away, but Fey was right there in her face and she couldn’t hide her discomfort.
“Then what?” she asked, not willing to let it go. She’d seen her wife’s expression change.
“It’s just…um…I just…” She realized she was being foolish. Fey knew everything about her. She glanced away, but not before noting they needed to dust, and then she turned back. “I feel pressure…” she began lamely.
“That’s a good thing,” Fey smiled, about to laugh as she flexed her fingers and watched her wife’s reactions closely.
Gasping at the pleasure, Allyssa grinned in return and would have closed her eyes to enjoy it more, but Fey stopped and asked, “What else?”
Feeling that other pressure reminded her. She glanced up and with a slight look of disgust passing over her face answered her wife, “I feel like I’m going to pass gas too.”
Fey could feel the laughter bubbling up inside her but thought it prudent not to give in to the impulse. Softly, she told her wife, “Ignore it. If it happens, it happens. It is just part of the pressure building up inside you.” With that, she continued the hand motion, watching her wife as she leaned in for a kiss. She could hear Allyssa drawing in air through her nose, making a slight whistling sound as she gasped for oxygen. Thrusting, she rubbed at the nub of flesh that was standing up and asking for attention. Fey could feel her own arousal as she thrust into her wife fervently. Neither of them was aware of the gas that Allyssa released as they concentrated on the pleasure that Fey’s thrusts were causing. As Allyssa came against her, her lithe body wrapping and grinding against her wife’s. Fey’s own fevered body climaxed in her jeans without actually being touched intimately.
“Oh, my gawd. That was insane!” Fey stated, leaning her head against Allyssa’s as she breathed deeply. She hadn’t known what came over her, but she wasn’t sorry.
“Um, babe…” Allyssa began hesitatingly. “Could you get up? I have a pencil digging in my neck, and I think a paperclip is now imbedded in my ass.”
Fey started laughing as she got up, feeling how squishy her jeans felt. She’d have to change her underwear as well as her jeans. She helped Allyssa up carefully, seeing the pencils that must have hurt. She found no signs of the paperclip, but later when she got ready for bed, Allyssa showed her one that had managed to fall inside her panties. They shared a delicious, little laugh over the incident.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Somehow, Keith was able to convince Rosemary to allow Sean and Traci to come up for a visit but only for one week. Keith drove them halfway and Allyssa met them. She smiled at the youngsters as they clambered into the Jeep and immediately started chattering about what they wanted to do around the ranch. Keith smiled, knowing this daughter-in-law of his would take good care of the children. He felt they needed to know this side of their family. They’d had too much influence from Rosemary’s side, and her older sons, Trever and Peter, had been terrible. They both still thought of Keith as a cash cow and berated him to their mother and in front of their siblings. It had led to far too many fights. Keith had been able to convince Rosemary to let the children go by telling her she needed time alone. The original two week visit she agreed to—she wouldn’t even consider the whole summer—had been pared down to one week due to her pique over some imagined slight that Keith and his family, meaning Fiona, had caused her. He shook his head as he thought about her and her manipulations over the years. He knew it was a bad marriage but couldn’t divorce her now, for the sake of his younger children. He knew she’d be cruel and malign him to his children. Already, Sean had said something to him once, and he was sure Traci saw it too. So, for the sake of a relative peace he would take his lumps and try to act like a happy family.
“We can go riding on the ATVs?” Sean was verifying with Allyssa.
“Can we ride the horses too?” Traci asked, just to be sure.
Allyssa laughed, delighted with their enthusiasm as she reassured them about the plans for the week they would spend with them. She was annoyed it was only a week but understood the whole summer would have been a bit much for Rosemary since she had already halved the original two weeks they agreed on.
“I can’t wait to see the new house,” Traci stated.
“I have fixed you up a room of your own,” Allyssa assured her, glancing at Sean to include him.
“We each have a room of our own?” the little girl clarified.
“Well, it is a four-bedroom house, and Fey wanted you both to know you are always welcome at your grandparents’ ranch.”
“Mom says we should have gotten more from it, inherited more,” Sean stated tentatively, almost as though it were a question.
“Well, you should ask Fey about that,” Allyssa countered, startled to hear a quote from Rosemary, but not really surprised. The woman was toxic.
“I was scared of Fiona at one time,” Traci confided.
“I told you she was only our older sister, just like Trevor and Peter,” Sean scoffed.
“Well, we never saw her like we saw them.”
“We didn’t see them when they were in the army either,” the older, more experienced preteen continued in the same vein.
“Don’t you think talking to your sister should be civil?” Allyssa asked, giving Sean a look that told him not to continue. “You are right,” she responded to Traci, glancing in the rearview mirror, so she knew she was talking to her. “You didn’t get to see her as much as she would have liked. Luckily for me, she was living and working in Denver, so I got to meet her.”
“Did you love her right away?” the little girl asked, suddenly glad her sister-in-law was defending her against her older brother.
“No,” she admitted. “I did, however, admire her and the work she does. I mean, who wouldn’t?” she said, sounding like an older teen, which they could relate to. Despite her earlier words to Sean, he relaxed. “She worked with animals, and I love them. Then, I got to work with them too, and it was amazing.”
“Weren’t you cleaning up their shit?” Sean asked, grinning.
“Watch your mouth,” she said automatically, suddenly realizing she sounded like her mother and then acknowledging that wasn
t all bad. “Yes, I was cleaning up after them. After all, that’s part of taking care of animals.”
“That’s why I’d rather ride the ATVs than the horses,” he put in enthusiastically.
“Well, I hope you don’t want to ride all the time. There are some places you can’t get to with the ATVs, and Fey and I both would like to show you some other places.”
“Can’t her truck go everywhere with four-wheel drive?”
Allyssa smiled at the mention of the truck. Everyone who saw it marveled at its features. “Almost everywhere,” she clarified. The hours in the Jeep went by quickly with the children’s many questions, and when they began to recognize landmarks, they got excited. Allyssa stopped in Sweetwater to pick up their mail and a couple things at the market. She made sure she introduced their guests as Fey’s beloved sister and brother. Many of their friends and acquaintances made the youngsters feel welcome. One or two even made sure they knew their sister was a hero. Allyssa and her sister- and brother-in-law basked in the glow of Fiona’s fame. Although Allyssa was also a hero in her own right, she didn’t correct anyone. The fame was good for Herriot Veterinary Services and business had been booming.
“Hey, there!” Fey greeted her brother and sister with big hugs when she saw them out at the ranch.
Talking a mile a minute and repeating some of the things Allyssa had heard on the trip out, they quickly caught up. During their conversation, Allyssa managed to ask about the horse trailer she’d seen hooked up to the truck, and she learned they had two guests in the barn. Two perfectly healthy horses were waiting for the children to care for them. Despite the novelty of the ATV, even Sean was enthused about checking out these new horses.
“I did good, eh?” Fey whispered to Allyssa when the children quieted enough to pet the new arrivals, who sniffed them thoroughly as they mutually got to know each other.
“You did good,” she murmured back, nudging her shoulder as she smiled at the children and their horses.
“Um, there is something I wanted to discuss with you.”
Turning to her wife, Allyssa could see the serious look on her face and stiffened marginally, wondering what was on her mind.
“The Greater Oregon Second Chance Horse Rescue is shutting down.”
“What is that?”
“It’s an organization that rescues mainly thoroughbred horses, who have been the victims of abuse and neglect. An affiliated group in Washington has begun training these horses as therapy animals.”
“That’s wonderful,” she breathed, enthralled with the idea and already planning on looking them up on the internet. Then, the reality of what Fey originally said hit her. “Wait! They are shutting down?”
Fey nodded. “I said we’d take twenty of the horses,” she gestured at the land beyond the barn and their ranch yard. “We have plenty of room and feed.”
“Absolutely. How many horses do they have?”
“I don’t know,” she admitted, “but I don’t want any of them out on the range unless they are fixed and have had a health check.”
“Of course,” she nodded in agreement, planning how they could get maximum exposure for this endeavor over the internet.
“You’re thinking,” Fey teased, seeing her wife’s thoughtful expression and smiling. She’d known Allyssa would be supportive.
“How many could we support?” she asked.
“Well, with the cattle and the wild horses out there, we can support more because we don’t depend on the income from any of that, but we can’t just take them all. That would be irresponsible and–”
“Well, wait. Let’s look at the therapy horse idea. I mean, I know I don’t know anything about it, but let’s see if we can do what that other organization is doing.”
“You mean the one in Washington?”
Allyssa nodded. “We have the room. I certainly have the time. If it grows too big, we can take donations and hire people. Meanwhile, we can look for volunteers. It’s the only way I’m going to meet some of our neighbors since I only leave the ranch for necessities.”
“It’s not for lack of invitations,” her wife pointed out. They had several invites to cookouts, and barring any issues with the doctor’s schedule, they planned to attend. Allyssa just didn’t want to go by herself without Fiona’s support.
“Well, it would be a great way to get out some of the information, but I was really thinking about the newsletter. Maybe I should start another one about the Falling Pines Ranch Horse Rescue or maybe we should call it the Sweetwater Horse Rescue?” she mused aloud.
“Now, wait a minute. You are getting ahead of yourself. Weren’t we about ready to try for a baby?” she asked, concerned at her wife’s enthusiasm.
“I believe we can do both, don’t you?”
Grinning, knowing her wife could do exactly that, she reached up to give her a kiss. “Absolutely,” she said as she gave her a peck on the lips.
“Yuck,” Sean said distinctly.
“Get used to it, boyo. This is my wife,” his older sister told him, turning the grin on her face toward him. “Do you think you can care for her?” she asked, nodding towards the horse and changing the subject. She also glanced over at Traci to make sure she was okay. Traci looked enthralled as her mare nuzzled her.
“You bet I can,” he enthused, sounding confident.
“I have some gear in the back of the trailer. Wanna haul it in here and divvy it up with your sister?”
“You betcha,” he replied, giving his horse a final pat and carefully leaving the stall they had put her in, not wanting to startle the horse.
“Can I help?” Traci asked.
“Sure. If you can carry it, you can help,” her older sister responded, pleased that they were so enthused.
As Traci carefully let herself out of the stall, being cautious as the mare tried to follow her wanting more pats, she answered, “No, I meant can I help with the horse rescue?” she asked, proving she had been listening.
“Little pitchers have big ears,” Allyssa murmured quietly as her wife looked uncomfortable.
“Well, while you are here,” she promised, wondering how quickly the rescue would send the horses she had agreed to take to their ranch. She’d only spoken with them that morning, but her reputation preceded her, so they wouldn’t have to check her out.
“You gonna have a baby?” the young girl asked, proving once again she had been listening.
“Well, we are going to try,” the doctor answered, looking distinctly uncomfortable at her sister’s question and hoping she wasn’t going to ask how.
“That’s good. You two should have kids,” she said as she went to help her brother with the gear in the trailer.
“Who should have kids?” Sean asked, both hands filled with a heavy saddle as he trudged along.
“Fey and Allyssa. They’re planning on having kids.”
“Women can’t have kids with other women, stupid,” he stated as he struggled with the weight he was carrying.
“Can too,” she asserted stoutly.
He turned to continue the argument, but the saddle was too heavy for him to hold for long, so he brought it into the barn where his older sister and her wife were standing and listening to them argue. He flushed. “You can’t, can you?” he asked instead, to hide his embarrassment.
“We can, and we plan to,” his sister told him, showing him how to put the saddle on the wooden stand outside each of the new residents’ stalls. “Here. You want to make sure it has support, so you don’t ruin it,” she explained, making it a teaching experience as she showed him how.
“Um…how can you?” he mumbled as he corrected his placement of the saddle on the wood.
“Well, that is something your mom and dad don’t want you to know yet. We haven’t tried it yet and don’t know if it will be successful. All you need to know is that we love each other and having children is part of that love. We want a family.”
“Aren’t we your family?” Traci asked as she came in car
rying reins and other gear including a saddle blanket.
“Of course, you are,” Allyssa assured her, taking the blanket and putting it on top of the saddle to keep off dust and debris that could be prevalent in a barn.
“Yes, you are,” her much older sister assured her, taking the reins, judging which horse they were for, then hanging them up and showing her siblings at the same time. “Any children Allyssa and I have will be your nieces or nephews,” she pointed out.
“I’ll get the other saddle,” Sean volunteered, wanting to get away from this icky, girly subject fast.
“I’ll get the rest,” Traci assured them, racing after her brother.
“And that is that,” Allyssa laughed. She hadn’t missed her wife’s agitation over the subject.
“How the hell did we just do that?” she asked, shaking her head and knowing if Rosemary was there she would have been horrified.
“We handled it,” her wife assured her.
“We did, didn’t we?” she smiled, putting her arm around her wife’s waist and giving it a squeeze. “We’re going to be excellent parents.”
“Well, I’ve never been around babies,” Allyssa reminded her, “but, I’m willing to try.”
“We will succeed,” she assured her confidently, giving her a final squeeze as she moved out of the embrace to help her siblings with the rest of the gear.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Two days later, the Greater Oregon Second Chance Horse Rescue arrived, their cavalcade of trucks pulling horse trailers. Twenty horses were soon installed in the corrals, barn, and even in a couple other corrals that had never been fixed up or repaired. Everyone was curious to meet the doctor and her wife, the first of them arriving well before the Herriots were ready. Allyssa had already begun dealing with the legalities of setting up their charity. She had contacted their lawyer about setting up a non-profit, so they could take donations, and she wanted details on how it would affect them tax-wise.
That morning, Allyssa had just received two of the four pieces of the new kennel that she and Fey had ordered for the addition. The larger piece on the bottom would house four large dogs, and the top piece could hold six smaller dogs or cats. They were going to put the other two pieces in the box stall across from their surgery in the barn. They heard another truck soon after she had accepted the first two pieces. She was annoyed they hadn’t delivered all four pieces in the first truck, and assuming it was a second truck with the rest of her load, she ignored it. She and the two kids continued struggling to get the long, stainless-steel box through the door to the addition. They placed it in the spot she had cleared for it, and the kids ran with her to fetch the second one. She looked up in surprise when the first horse trailer entered the ranch yard.
