Virgil looks at me, a mix of anger and sadness. We both started this business when we were younger and broke as fuck. But now life has shown me a way to be happier. To have things I thought would only stay in my dreams; a family.
"Fine," he says, exhaling. "Just know that if you need anything, you or Wendy, you can call on me."
"Yes, I'll even check in once in a blue moon."
I push the papers on my desk toward him. Virgil sighs and signs each paper with sharp signatures. My debt collecting agency is in good hands. I know it.
"Thank you, Virgil. You're level headed. I know you'll do well."
"Yeah, we'll see," he says.
"Hey! Oliver," Wendy says, popping her head inside. "I'm going out real quick. Got to go to the club to pick up my stuff. I also wanted to say goodbye to them."
"Just a second, I'll be done in a minute."
"No, I'm going by myself," Wendy corrects me.
"No you are not--"
"Look, we can't live in fear forever. I know you want to protect me. But I have something I didn't last time."
"What?"
"Heat!" Wendy flashes a silver gun that I gave her a few days ago. She caught on how to use it well. I give it good thought and decide not to follow along.
"Fine, please call me while you're out though."
"Sure thing. See ya, Virgil. You're gonna be one kickass collector!"
"Thanks."
As soon as she hops out the front door I order my men to follow behind incognito. One can never be too careful.
Wendy
6 Months Later...
The house Oliver bought for us was modest, yet luxurious to say the least. It had five bedrooms and the high ceilings help me feel like I'm not crowded in. Saying goodbye to my old life was refreshing, and I appreciate everything I've been through because now I'm here with the love of my life; Oliver Lothrop.
I'm such a housewife now, cooking meals in a large gourmet kitchen and screwing my man's brains out.
But more importantly, I have a life! A new, fun, financially stable life!
Our pet dog, Blue comes racing in with a bunch of mail in its mouth through the kitchen. Oliver chases behind, trying to get the pup to slow down before it makes a mess.
"Blue! Down, boy."
"Blue's a girl, Oliver!"
"It doesn't matter, this dog won't stop!" he says, trying to corner Blue in. I can't decide which is more important to watch. The showoff between my husband and dog or the soup I'm trying to make for dinner tonight.
"Come here, Blue baby!" I say, patting my lap. She gallops up to me and drops the mail in my hand. I sift through and see a piece of mail that catches my eye.
"Oh? I have mail from Grace University!"
"Open it," Oliver urges.
Nervous, and totally expecting a denial letter, I open the envelope and my eyes fall on the words...
'Congratulations! You were accepted!'
I shriek in disbelief. No way! I got in!
"Oliver!"
"I know! I can tell by your expression, darling!"
I run into Oliver's arms and he kisses me deeply. I can never get tired of that slight scratchiness from his stubble. His cologne smells good, but why does it smell like burning--oh shit!
"The food!" I exclaim, running over to the bubbling stew that's spilling over into the flames of the stove. "Dinner's a wreck now! I was supposed to keep stirring it!"
"Stop, Wendy, you just got good news. I think dinner at a nice restaurant should do nicely."
"I think so too," I say, looking at him with all the love in my heart. "I love you, Oliver."
"I love you too, Wendy. Let's go. We can take the Lamborghini!"
Who knew happy ever afters... felt so damn good.
