by George G. Gilman

The half-breed nodded and swung up into the saddle of the mare. ‘You said something at Black Bear Bluff yesterday, feller.’

‘I said a lot of things, mister.’

‘About liking it best if Cal Butler was alive with a lot of years of suffering ahead of him.’

  ‘So?’

  ‘You got what you wanted.’

  ‘How come?’

It had been silent inside the house for a long time. Abruptly, Little Fawn vented a shrill scream of despair. And then her bare feet beat on the floor in a run.

‘Private,’ Edge replied to Temple’s question. ‘Like I told somebody a long time ago - incest is a family affair.’

Little Fawn lunged out onto the stoop, her pretty face made obscenely ugly by the physical expression of mental torment.

Lee Temple fisted a hand around the butt of his Whitney. But it was not the lawman’s gun that cracked out a killing shot. Exploded a bullet which took the girl high in the back, left of centre, and sent her sprawling into the inertness of death in the front yard

  ‘What the...?’ Temple started.

‘That a rifle or a revolver shot, sheriff?’ Edge asked as he turned his horse away from the house.

‘What?’ the tall, thin lawman asked, totally confused by the speed he had seen and heard events since reaching the house.

Edge spat into the yard. ‘There ain’t no mystery, feller. You must know the difference. So you can’t say you don’t have a clue, as to which Butler did it.’
