“No!” I scream. I run in using the shotgun as a bat, swinging and driving the creatures back. But they know that there is fresh flesh here and they won’t stop.
I manage to clear them back just enough to reach down and grab her. I drag her back to the fireplace. She is bleeding out quickly. I look down and see that she is covered in blood, she must have been bitten more while she was on the ground.
“I’m sorry,” I whisper to her. She reaches up for my face, and I see the life leave her eyes.
I lean her against the wall and grab the large tongs that are next to the fireplace. I grab us them to grab a log from the fireplace and I toss it into the group of oncoming zombies. I do this again with two more pieces of wood.
The tattered clothing of the undead catches fire quickly. And the fire spreads.
I flop down next to Carrie and take her in my arms. I can feel the burning sensation building up inside me again. This infection is going to take me soon.
With my injured are wrapped around Carrie, I reach down and remove the pistol from her waist. I place the barrel to my head.
I can see the fire spreading among the zombies, at least I’ll take as many of them out as I can. Maybe this fire will burn the whole damn world.
I scan the room one more time and see more and more of them spilling in through the openings. Then I squeeze my finger.
