He nods. “I don’t agree. But I love you enough to support your decision.”
A lighting bolt through the heart. I wouldn’t have noticed a lightning bolt through the heart, after what he just said. “You love me?”
He nods. “Yes. Yes I do.”
My vision blurs. I blink, and feel wet spill down my cheeks. “You’re everything I could want in a woman, Aubrey. And if I have to wait to see you again… well. I guess I’ll just have to wait.”
I pull him close. “Oliver. Oliver. My darling Olly. You don’t have to wait. You don’t.”
I take him in my arms. My body sings with complaint, and I don’t care. I need him. I need him.
We make love. I take him inside me, and it’s all I want. This man’s devotion to me. He’s everything I could possibly need. I want his arms around me. I want his lust inside me. I want his breath on my skin. I want my name on his lips.
“OHhhhhhh, Oliver,” I whisper. “Olly, my sweet Olly. Please. Please.”
I go away. All there is, is us. Rocking together in sweet union, holding on tight to each other, pulling each other closer to warm, wet bliss. I need you inside me. Stay in me, Darling Olly. Stay with me.
I squeeze him tight, within me. My arms are wrapped around him, holding him close. His pulse hammers inside him. I feel him quicken and buck inside me. He’s going to let go. He’s going to let go. I lose myself.
Oliver cries out as he comes in me. He fills me up inside, and I can’t take anymore. A wet hot tidal wave of pressure bursts inside me, and washes up my spine. I grab onto my lover, holding on tight, for fear of getting swept away. Olly. My Olly.
The orgasm spills though me. I bite my lip and hang on. His cries fill my ear. Our bodies are one, trembling and rocking together as our hearts forget to beat.
We fall together, on the bed. Catching our breath, coming back to ourselves. I open my eyes, and he’s there, smiling. I never thought I could be this happy, be this full. Now that I’m here… I never want to leave.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
Oliver
My stay at the Palace comes to an end. The funds I promised are wired to the Keller Foundation, and to Aubrey.
I fly back to New York, alone. It’s so goddamned quiet. I try and fail to sleep on the flight. It’s galling, but I’ve gotten used to sleeping next to Her. She kissed me one last time, and promised me she would come to me.
I’ve never been a patient man. Having pockets as deep as mine, you don’t have to wait long, for almost anything. Now I have to wait for Her.
I wonder how long it’s going to be. For the first time in my life, there’s something entirely beyond my power to control. It’s exhilarating and nerve-wracking, all at once.
Please, Aubrey. Please don’t be long.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Aubrey
I fly home in first class. It’s too quiet. The steward brings me champagne. I thank him. It’s just not as sweet, somehow.
From the airport, I’m driven in a town car back to my dorm. The whole thing looks and feels so small. I’ve awakened from a dream, and returned home a new person. Richer, to say the least.
I have a debriefing with Margot, the next day. She gives me a knowing smile, and I give it right back. We have something in common, now.
She walks me through everything I need to know, in order to access my money. All twenty-one million dollars of it. Even now, I thought it might be some kind of scam. Some horrific illusion, some cruel hoax. But no. The money is real, and every last cent of it is mine. You can bet I fucking earned it.
I have nine thousand transferred to me— enough to cover my expenses for where I’m going, but not so much as to draw unwelcome attention from the IRS. They really have thought of everything.
I take a few days, and think. I haven’t returned to my classes. I may drop out. Re-apply someplace else. Sky’s the limit, now. The more time I spend alone, though, the more I realize that I do want to be with Oliver. I hoped I would feel this way. But I’m glad I made sure, all the same.
~~~
It was an easy thing, finding Oliver Sable. (The internet is a wonderful place.) I buy a train ticket, and ride the rails up to New York City to surprise him at his office.
A taxi takes me to his address. I shouldn’t be surprised, but it’s one of the tallest buildings in the city. Of course it is. I stand there, looking up at it, soaking up all the sights and smells and sounds of this place, when I hear a familiar voice.
“Holy fuck, look at you!”
I turn my head. Mitch stands at the curb, getting out of a town car. “I’ll be god damned. The little strumpet followed him home.”
I have nothing to say to him. He comes close, and leers at me. “I don’t know what the fuck you think you’re doing here, baby girl. But we’re in the real world now. Oliver doesn’t have time for little miss country mouse and her million dollar cooze any—”
I’ve never punched anyone in the face, before. I’m inclined to believe there’s such a thing as beginner’s luck, though, because I punch Mitch square in the face, and he falls over like timber.
My hand hurts, but it’s worth it. I look down at Mitch, moaning on the ground, half-conscious.
“Fuck you, Mitch, you sack of human garbage.”
I leave him on the concrete, and walk into the building.
I announce myself at the security desk. It turns out Oliver left instructions that I was to be let right up. I ask one of the security guards not to announce me, if possible. He nods, while the other guard behind the desk walks with me to the elevator.
We arrive on the top floor.
The doors slide open. I nod to the guard. “I can take it from here.” He nods for me, and the doors slide shut behind me.
I walk toward Olly’s office, my heels clicking and clacking on the floor. Every step takes me closer to my lover, to our new life together. I can’t wait for it to begin.
