The boys in the gang soon grew desperate. It wasn’t long before they turned on each other. Darcy opened the throat of one of the younger boys over half a potato. The other members stayed away from him after that.
Things got bad, and then they got worse. Darcy abandoned the gang, and the growling in his belly driving him further and further south. He took to robbing anyone he came across at knifepoint. One day he stumbled across a fifteen-year-old girl pleading for her life at the other end of his blade.
“Please. This is all the food my family has. I’ll let ya flah me if you like, just don’t take my basket.”
Darcy grunted. He was tempted by the offer. The girl would have been pretty if not for her skeletal-like body.
“No deal. They had better find more.”
The girl fell to her knees. “You can’t; they’ll all starve.”
“Food’s as scarce as hen’s teeth. If I don’t take it from you, then someone else will. If I don’t steal from you, then I’ll die too.”
She grew desperate. “Wait, I’ve heard of a way you could get some food. I’ll…give you half and tell you where you can find more.”
Darcy considered her words. The girl was probably lying, but he should hear what she had to say on the off chance she wasn’t. “This aren’t the dog’s bollocks?”
“It’s God’s honest truth—I swear by my mum’s life.”
“Sounds grand.”
The girl divided her small basket in half. It was a paltry selection of two withered leaks, half a blackened potato, and a crust of bread.
“There’s a woman in Skibbereen rumored to pay her wages out in food.”
“What kinda’ food?”
“No one will say, but everyone in her gang is as fit as a fiddle. She’s recruitin’ soldiers and anyone who joins her war gets a fair share.”
The information caught Darcy’s interest. “What’s this woman’s name?”
“They call her Queen Luna.”
