Jasper contemplated the pack, then decided he’d get to it later. He shoved it against the wall, then took the clean utilities and opened the closet and put them on a hanger. He hesitated a moment, his finger stroking the “Gyver” nametag, a smile creasing his face.
Being in the militia, going through what he did, had had a big impact on his life. Serving with the Marines as a liaison had been equally noteworthy. It had been horrible, but it had been great, maybe the best thing he’d ever done. He felt like he’d accomplished something, that he’d become part of history. Part of him wanted to go back, to look up JJ and get that waiver, to become a real Marine. The sirens were calling him, and not for the first time.
What was he here? An algae farmer, one of the hundreds of thousands if not more of them, all busily going about their lives like bees in a hive, producing mankind’s honey. As a Marine, though, he’d be something special, someone admired and looked up to.
“Amee! That’s mine! Give it back! I’m going to tell Opa!” Pieter screeched, his voice reaching up from downstairs.
And Jasper smiled. He was something, he was admired, and people looked up to him. And he had a good woman who loved him, one he loved right back.
He pulled apart the hanging clothes and hung the utilities on one of the hooks on the back wall. Hesitating only a moment, he pushed the other clothes back together, hiding the utilities out of sight.
“OK, who was it that wanted me to read them The Lion and the Elephant!” he shouted down the stairs as he walked out of the bedroom.
