The Wreck of Our Hearts Page 19

by Yajna Ramnath

Dasher kissed me long and hard. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his cellphone. He scrolled through his list of music and selected a song. The familiar tunes of The Wreck of Our Hearts played while he moved our bodies slowly on the side of the road.

“You broke your promise, Aria,” he whispered.

  “What?”

“You were supposed to make me regret every moment of life if I made it out alive.”

“Didn’t you know, Dasher,” I smiled. “Promises are meant to be broken.”

You thought it was over, didn’t you? It is. Dasher and Aria are going to skip into their happily ever after, rainbows and sunshine and farting unicorn life.

  Me?

Oh, you have no idea what I’m about to bring into the world.

As a child, I witnessed the death of my mother. As an early adult, I witnessed the death of a baby sister and the downfall of my happy go, lucky brother.

It turned me into the man that chopped three grown men into a million pieces.

It turned me into the man that successfully pinned the murders on the family who gave my siblings and I shelter.

It turned me into the man that seized control over their empire and made it my own.

It turned me into the most powerful man in New York City.

I sit at the very top of my glass tower. Unfortunately, she’s about to come into my life. She’s an assassin and the princess of the mafia, and for some odd reason, she wants my blood.

  Afterword

For 3 years, I was in love with a boy who I had only met once. I know you might be thinking how is that even possible? Are you sure you were in love? It shouldn’t be that big of a deal! You guys hardly even met!

  Yeah, I heard it all.

I have a warped idea of what love is supposed to be. Maybe it came from those around me or maybe the books I read where happily-ever-afters are possible.

Suffice it to say, I was a very optimistic girl four years ago. So when a boy who was driven, hardworking and very handsome told me that he was in love with me, I believed him.

I believed all the plans we made for our future. I believed all the sweet photographs and promises to meet the family.

There was always a justification for everything that never made sense to me. Either I made those justifications or he made the excuses that were believable enough.

We couldn’t speak on the phone unless no one was around. We couldn’t meet unless no one was around. We couldn’t be public over Facebook because he wasn’t the type of guy to flaunt relationships publicly.

I was in a one-sided relationship and it took me writing this book to actually figure it out.

He moved on within four months of “ending” things (because is it really ending things if you say let’s continue as we were and see where this goes?). He publicly announced he was in a relationship and hadn’t told me about it for months.

  My heart was crushed.

I don’t think I was ever hurt about the fact that he left me. I think I was hurt about the fact that someone could be that cruel and that irresponsible with my feelings.

I was hurt about the fact that, he could easily say hurtful things and treat me as if the three years were for nothing. Let me just say to all the men and women out there, there are better ways to end things.

For months I sunk into depression. I stopped writing, I didn’t care all that much about anyone and anything around me. I felt sorry for myself and I ignored every bit of advice given to me.

Then I realized that he was out there living his life while I sat back and felt sorry for myself.

I have a lot of pride so I decided no more.

I made life-altering decisions like getting that tattoo I always wanted (thanks Shiki!), going horse-riding, walking the suspension bridge at Oribi Gorge, I got a promotion at work, I decided to go back to school and work on getting my degree, and most importantly—I started writing again.

I guess I learned that there is a time and place to feel upset and to feel bad. No one can tell you that you cannot feel however it is that you want to feel. There is no expiration date on pain.

But at some point, you’re gonna have to put yourself first. That is exactly what I’m doing.

Maybe one day, I’ll find prince charming. Maybe I’ll spend the rest of my life writing stories.

Till then, I’m just going to continue being that blindly optimistic girl who wants to believe in fairytales and unicorns.
