“I like to do my part, ma’am.”
“After IUGA lost its license to employ automatons, I think Canto just kind of gave up. It’s fitting, though, that he died on the day of Narowyn’s retirement.”
“And the day of your taking over the reins of the Transcender Society.” He gets to his feet. “Stay here for a sec. This may be the only moment we have alone all day, and I have something to give you.”
He opens the top drawer of the dresser and takes out a long navy blue box tied with a white ribbon. He plops down next to me again and places it in my hand. “A little congratulatory gift.”
“Ry, that’s so sweet.” I fumble with the ribbon and open the hinged box. Inside I’m stunned to find a platinum necklace with a diamond pendant in the shape of an infinity symbol and a brilliant emerald set inside each sworl.
“This is gorgeous,” I say, lifting it from the box. “Will you put it on for me?”
He fastens the chain around my neck. “It’s very similar to a piece of jewelry I had years ago. Where did you find it?”
“Ralston took me to that antique jewelry store on Fifth. The emeralds remind me of your eyes. He thought you’d like it.”
“He was right. I love it.” My arms circle his neck, and he scoops me up into his lap.
Placing one hand behind my head he brings his mouth slowly down on mine. “Mmm, he murmurs from deep within his throat. He uses his lips to tease, excite, and arouse me.
“You’re not playing fair,” I say. “You know we’re expecting visitors any minute.”
“I know.” He nuzzles my ear. “I just get carried away sometimes. Have I told you how proud I am of you?”
“Only about a million times. But I always love hearing it.”
“Today marks the beginning of a new life for us, Jade, and a new world order, really. The Age of Illuminosity, the media are calling it. They say the energy of the entire planet will be raised because of the Transcenders’ work. You’ll now have your rightful place on the world stage. You’ve certainly earned it.”
“I would never have gotten here without you, Ry. You’ve made me softer but stronger somehow. This is what I’ve been working so hard for, and it’s what I’ve always wanted, but I’m not sure I’m completely prepared.” My eyes search his for reassurance.
“Who can ever be completely prepared, love? We can’t be certain what destiny holds for us in the next year, or the next hour, really. But you know what the Transcenders say ...”
“Fear not the many paths of life,” we say together, laughing and falling back onto the bed.
