Love on the High Seas Page 21

by Yasmin Sullivan

“We didn’t last very long that time, did we?”

  Jeremy smiled. It was true.

“It’s hard to last long with you,” he said.

Angelina, curled against Jeremy’s chest, was filled with peace. But Jeremy wasn’t calm at all. A thousand thoughts raced through his mind, and jubilation filled him. But he had to know...

  “Did you mean it?”

She was quiet. She knew what he meant; he had heard her. She couldn’t pretend.

  “Yes.”

Tenderness filled Jeremy until he thought he would burst. He slid from underneath Angelina and pinned her to the bed with a kiss.

“I love you, too,” he said. He saw Angelina’s breath get caught in her throat. “I’ve loved you since before I knew your name. Angelina, marry me.”

She thought her ears were betraying her.

  “What?”

  “Marry me.”

Angelina looked into Jeremy’s eyes and saw his emotions, his seriousness, his beauty. It drew a confession from her that she hadn’t known she was ready to make—another one.

“You know, you’ve become a character in my novel.”

Jeremy pulled himself up onto his elbow. “You’re writing a novel? About what?”

“A historical fiction from a history teacher. It’s about a rebellious slave who turns out to be a beautiful man. He turns out to be you.”

“Will you let me read it?”

“If I ever finish it. If it’s any good.”

  “I’m sure it will be.”

They both knew that he was waiting.

Angelina turned toward Jeremy and kissed him.

  “Is this my answer?”

“Yes, it is. Yes, I’ll marry you.”

Jeremy pulled Angelina against his chest and claimed her as his own with his lips.

“That’s good,” he said, “because there might be a little one on the way.”

  “What?” she asked.

  “We didn’t use anything.”

“I am,” Angelina said. “I mean, I did.”

The look of disappointment on Jeremy’s face churned Angelina’s heart.

“Soon,” she said, “but not right away.”

“I’ll accept soon,” he said. “I love you.”

This time, when they kissed, it was slow and tempered, as filled with tenderness as it was with passion. But it was building another fire between them. They both knew that they would be making love again, that it had already started—their joining, their life together. And this time, it would last and last.
