I turn to my brothers for guidance. Some nod, some shrug.

“If my brothers have seen fit to forgive you, to allow you at our table… then I will trust their judgement," I say.

Ibalen lowers his horns. “Thank you, Wranar. Your trust will not be misplaced, I assure you.”

That only leaves Torbok and Narbok. “Where are the twins?” I ask.

“Their ship is still on its way,” Surlok answers. “I have received some transmissions. They had some engine troubles, so they are traveling by impulse drive only. They should arrive in the coming weeks.”

I bask in the glow a moment longer as I enjoy my human soup and my earth bread. After all this time, after all this trouble…

  We are finally re-united.

“What’s life like on Kysus, Wranar?” Vukaror asks.

“Grim.” I inform my brothers of the situation on Mount Cernd — I pray that our people are doing okay — and of all that I’ve encountered on our trek to the palace.

My brothers listen attentively. When I’ve answered all their questions, Vukaror clears his throat.

“It is time we begin the process of migrating the Kaizon to Earth. Never before have our people faced a greater challenge — and it’s up to us to make it happen.”

“We can’t just open the floodgates,” I say. “We’ll just be transporting the civil war from Kysus to Earth.”

  “Agreed,” Kerax says.

“We must unite the Houses again,” Ibalen says. “I have been gone for a while, but vast swaths of House De’Riv will still follow me. You have your people in Mount Cernd. Together we can restore peace to the capital, and show the other Houses that there is a different world out there.”

“One I will only let them access if they agree to our demands,” Vukaror says. “The Earth Women are our salvation. They are to be cherished — and not plundered. Any Kaizon who harms a human female will be banished from Earth. No exceptions.”

  Everyone nods in agreement.

“There is still one important subject left to discuss; hierarchy.”

Vukaror turns to me. “Wranar, I understand that Drarsan, Surlok and Febakur put you on the throne when Kerax and myself left.”

“That is correct,” I say. “I was honored to assume the mantle.”

“Do you wish to remain in that position?” Vukaror asks.

“My reign was merely… temporary,” I say, surprised by his question. “Now that we are all re-united, you are in charge. I didn’t think that would need to be specified.”

“I’m not saying what you should do, I’m asking what you want to do, little brother,” Vukaror says. “For our people in Mount Cernd look to you for guidance. I have been away for a long time. You are much more in tune with the situation on Kysus. I think that you should remain King, brother.”

I’m taken aback. My fellow brothers nod, lowering their horns to me.

“I… really? If you all think so then… yes, I would be honored.”

Vukaror breaks into a wild smile. “Then all hail King Wranar!”

“Hail!” my brothers shout in unison.

“But you will all remain my most trusted council, and I will keep looking to you all for guidance,” I add.

“Of course. Knowning you, I’m sure you have a detailed plan laid out already for how to proceed with the Migration. Correct?”

“I… have some ideas, yes,” I answer truthfully.

“Lay them out for us, little brother.”

“Well, I was thinking… We conquer the palace, set up a Safe Zone, and begin the slow migration of Kaizon warriors to Earth — only a dozen per day, as not to overwhelm our camp here, which will need to be expanded rapidly and massively. A small group travels to Mount Cernd to lead our people back to the city, which we will take together with the loyal De’Riv forces. After the first warriors have acclimated to Earth they can start leading patrols around our Earth camp for protection, and they can save any human females they come across in these forests. We need a lot more mates, after all.”

My fellow brothers smirk as I take them through my strategic plans.

“It’s been decided,” Vukaror says as he grabs his drink. “Tomorrow, we change the fate of Kysus and Earth forever. To our neras, brothers!”

“To our neras!” We all toast.

Speaking of my mate… with our business here concluded…

I cannot wait to get back to Belinda. My quad is ready for more.

  Epilogue

  3 months later..

  Belinda

“Welcome to Camp Nera, girls. I’m sure you have a lot of questions, so I will dive right in if ya’ll don’t mind.”

Twenty girls stare back at me. They are the latest batch of prisoners freed by the Kaizon patrols that roam these forest now. We’re taking back our world from the raiders, one freed life at a time.

“The men who freed you are called Kaizon,” I say. “And believe it or not, they are on our side.”

“Bullshit,” a blonde girl at the front row says. She’s hungry, tired and scared. They all are. I wish we could feed them first, let them rest, and then tell them about the alien warriors, but…

That’s not really possible, seeing as the aliens are the one that saved their lives and killed their captors. I’ve decided to start with this little orientation as soon as possible. The quicker they get over the shock of seeing horned aliens before their very eyes, the better.

“That was what I first thought when I met them as well,” I say, “but you’ve got to believe me.”

“Why would we?”! The blonde says. “We’ve traded one captor for another!” She’s angry, and I can’t blame her. Her whole life, no has been on her side.

  That’s all about to change.

“Because… you’re free to go,” I say, pointing at the door. “We haven’t captured you. We’ve saved you. And we’re offering you — all of you — a change to stay here, in the safety of Camp Nera. And if you don’t want to stay, you’re free to go. And also free to return any time you do want to take us up on this offer.”

I see several eyes light up, and that warms my heart. I hope that in time, I can convince even the most jaded soul here that we mean well.

“If you look outside, you’ll see a whole sea of cabins — and more are being built every day. We’ve got beds for everyone, and food as well,” I say.

“This is all too good to be true,” the blonde counters. “What’s the catch?”

“There is no catch,” I say.

Just the possibility of a Kaizon warrior deeming you his fated mate and claiming you.

“Why are the big guys helping you then?” She says. “I don’t get it.”

“If you give me just an hour of your time, I will explain everything to the best of my ability,” I say. “And then you will be free to make up your own mind.”

The girls are nod and sit down. I glance down at my notes, but I don’t really need them. I’ve given this speech every day for the past few months. Welcoming new girls into our little paradise — or Camp Nera, as the Kaizon have dubbed it — has become my new task.

Every member of our little gang now has an important job. Makayla is the head chef. Everyday hundreds of mouths need to be fed, and she makes sure that everyone’s belly is full. Dev is in charge of planning all the many, many expansions to our growing city; an architect and urban planner all in one. Zoey is our tailor, ensuring that all the incoming girls have more than rags to wear.

Joan trains all the girls in self-defense, something we hopefully won’t need with the Kaizon around, but it’s always good to be prepared. Eileen oversees all the work on the farms we’ve started to run, and Faith is our storyteller, our games master, the one who makes sure we stop to have fun and don’t spend all our days working our butts off.

And Jade? She’s the queen bee that keeps us all going, the captain of our voyage, the one who makes sure that squabbles get squashed, who understands Kaizon better than all of us and who can mediate when ne
eded.

That are our jobs… when we’re not too pregnant to do them, that is. We’re in the midst of a baby boom — the first of many. Makayla and Joan have both put two gorgeous little warriors on this Earth, and the rest of us are not that far behind.

With orientation completed, I head outside. The street is busy, with Kaizon males and human women coming and going. Across the street, Wranar is giving the same orientation I am — only difference is that he’s welcoming a fresh batch of Kaizon warriors to Earth.

His entire clan has moved from Mount Cernd to here, and now we’re even welcoming Kaizon from the other Houses to Earth. In the last few months my mate and his brothers have set up a Safe Zone around their old palace. Every day, a dozen new warriors get to come here.

Our lives have become quite hectic. We’ve all got new jobs, new responsibilities… I remember when I was pining for more work — now I’m swimming in it!

I’ve never been happier, though, because now I have my eternal mate on my side. Plus, we’re actually changing the world. Every single day our patrols free more girls, and more Kaizon warriors join our camp.

Faith strolls on by, her arms locked with Torbok and Narbok. The twins arrived two months ago, and as fate would have it, Faith was mated to both of them.

  She didn’t mind.

That’s the Faith I know — as calm as a rock, always accepting of her situation and willing to make the best of it. And if the universe gave her two Kaizon warriors to care for her… who was she to doubt the universe, after all?

I wave to her as she passes, her big grin making me chuckle.

“There you are,” my mate growls behind me.

I spin around just as Wranar wraps his arms around me tightly, his lips finding mine instantly.

“How are you, my nera?” He says, his claws pulling me close.

“I missed you,” I say. “How was your group of fresh warriors?”

“Eager to mate with all these beautiful females,” he chuckles. “I can’t blame them… for I know the joy of having a nera, and having the urge to mate with her endlessly.”

The look in his colorful eyes tell me all I need to know. I’ve got another meeting later, but…

I’ve always got time for my mate.

  The end!

  Chapter 1 - Jillian

  Oh boy.

I’ve heard only rumors about the ruthless Zoran. Some say they are seven feet tall and all bulging muscle, with sharp fangs and devilish horns, and eyes as red as fire. All I know for sure is that they are the most powerful force in the galaxy, and we humans have stayed clear of them.

  Until now.

I have no idea how to act around such infamous intergalactic killers. I am a geneticist, not a psychologist or a sociologist. I prefer to spend my time in the lab rather than mingling with people, and the intricacies of interspecies etiquette are absolutely lost on me.

At the moment, however, I’m concerned with more pressing matters.

What the hell am I going to wear?!

The Vonnegut glides its plotted course around Earth, the silence of space a stark contrast to the pandemonium inside my quarters as I desperately search my closet for appropriate attire. I had thought picking an outfit for my brother’s wedding was hard. What are you supposed to wear to an interspecies first contact?

“Try the black dress,” my assistant Kelly shouts. “I got the perfect heels to match it.”

I roll my eyes. I’m a woman of science, more at ease in a lab coat than a little black dress, and I am not about to go down in history as the klutz who tripped on her heels and spilled hot coffee on a Zoran General and accidentally incited an intergalactic war, thank you very much.

“What about my lab coat?” I ask Kelly. “I could just wear that. It’s distinguished and lends me an air of credibility… right?”

“Pff,” Kelly blows me off. “Who cares about any of that? You should look hot,” she says gleefully. “It’s your special night! Your first gala as head of the Bioscience program! Don’t you want to impress those Zoran warriors? I’ve heard they’re huge, with hands twice as big as our own… and you know what they say about aliens with big hands…”

“Is alien junk all you can think about?” I ask.

Kelly grins mischievously. “Don’t tell me it hasn’t crossed your mind.”

  “Never,” I lie.

Kelly is my best friend, and has been with me throughout my entire career. Wherever I go, she goes. We couldn’t be more different, but it works for us: I’m curvy with an unruly bush of brown curls, while Kelly has a slim figure and straight, golden-blonde hair. Furthermore, I’m perpetually single, while Kelly somehow manages to combine our grueling hours in the lab with an active dating life. How she juggles all her responsibilities is absolutely beyond me, but she pulls it off.

Together we lead a team with an intimidating but extremely important goal: to cure the black cough. Our planet is buckling under its own weight, and the uncontrolled polluting of the environment throughout the 21st century is now causing massive illnesses all around the globe. Those unfortunate souls who can’t afford to live in the luxury high-rises with their own filtered air systems are exposed to contaminated air on a daily basis.

I’m fortunate enough to live up here on the Vonnegut now, but my brother Michael still lives on the outskirts of New Atlanta, working in a plant to support his family. I raised him, and my desire to provide a better life for him is what gave me the drive to get where I am today.

Of course, I’ve had to make quite a few sacrifices to get where I am. I’ve missed more birthdays than I’m willing to count, and worst of all, the birth of my niece, Claire. She’s four years old now, but I haven’t been back to Earth since she was a baby. I tell myself I’m helping them with my research… but at times, that feels hollow.

The Zoran might be the answer. They’re superior to us in every way — physically and technologically — but they’re not known for their helpfulness. I have no idea why they’re even coming here or what they want from us. We are just a blip on the intergalactic radar, after all, but I fear the worst.

But before I can cure all of Earth’s problems, I still need to settle on a dress.

“What about this one?” I hold out something a little conservative: a drab, gray dress that would attract zero attention. Kelly instantly wrinkles her nose at me.

“What are you, eighty?” Kelly says. “The invitation clearly says black-tie, honey. The black dress it is!”

I sigh deeply. “Do I have to? I don’t think I’ve ever worn heels.”

“Then start practicing,” Kelly says. “I don’t see why you’re complaining. You get to witness history! I’d love to meet a Zoran General. I’ve heard they’re absolutely dreamy…”

“I’ve heard they drink the blood of their enemies,” I throw back at her, “so excuse me for not being too happy about it!”

“Ooh, primal,” Kelly laughs. “Me likey.”

  “You’re unbelievable.”

“You know it. Now get in that dress!”

I yield to her demands and shimmy my way into the black garment. I smooth it with my hands as I look at myself in the mirror, and I have to admit it looks good on me. And that is not something I admit lightly. The midnight black fabric accentuates my chestnut brown eyes and autumn leaf colored hair, a
nd it hugs my curves in all the right places. In fact I don’t think a dress has ever fit me better.

“See,” Kelly says as she stands next to me, completing my look with a golden necklace. “You look stunning. Ready to snatch yourself a Senator… or perhaps a Zoran general?” She teases.

I shiver at the thought. From a scientific point of view, we can learn so much from the Zoran, but that is not what Kelly is hinting at.

She wants me to acquaint myself with their physiology.

  Intimately.

I laugh it off, but thoughts fill my head. She’s planted a seed of curiosity in my mind with all this talk, and now it’s going to be tough to shake the thought.
