Glasses were raised. Afterward, everyone was in agreement with Elizabeth’s suggestion that they would all enjoy a stroll around the grounds. Lord Philip and Thomasina concurred with alacrity, now that their courtship could be public.
“I am surprised at you, Fitzwilliam,” Elizabeth said when they were outside and apart from the others. They were arm in arm, enjoying the physical closeness and, just as much, the emotional symmetry which tempered their passion with insight. “That toast seemed to be self-serving.”
“Why?”
She looked up at her husband, making no effort to conceal her emotions. “That you would offer a toast to celebrate parenting when you have done nothing, thus far, to earn such praise.”
“I was not speaking of myself. I was—” Fitzwilliam came to a stop. “What are you saying?”
She smiled. “I’m sure that you will be a commendable father, my dear,” she told him. “Just as you are a husband.”
Lady Catherine was scandalized to observe, as she turned past the blooming rose bushes of Pemberley, her nephew and his wife in an ardent embrace. Hurriedly, she urged Mr. Collins and Charlotte to turn away from the scene.
“I don’t know what’s come over people,” she said. “That my nephew should fall victim to the loose morals of the Pemberley Set!”
