DECEMBER 30
Egwin (d. 717)
Leadership
Egwin was bishop of Worcester in England from 693 to 711, and the probable founder of Evesham Abbey, one of the great Benedictine houses of medieval England. As with many other saints from his time, the stories about him were written years after his death. Popular taste demanded fabulous tales full of magic and mystery. We do him no service to repeat such material here.
Egwin died in 717 and was buried at Evesham Abbey.
DECEMBER 31
Melania and Pinian (ca. 383–438)
Faith at work
Melania was born in Rome to an extraordinarily wealthy family, about the year 383. She and her husband, Pinian, opened their home to others and gave their money away to the poor. They traveled to Roman northern Africa and became friends with Augustine (August 28). Their journeys eventually took them to Jerusalem in 417. In 431, a year after Pinian died, Melania founded a nunnery on the Mount of Olives, where her own life came to an end six years later.
Acknowledgments
My gratitude for the labor of Lil Copan at Paraclete Press is profound. This book is the offspring of her mind and spirit. Lil conceived the volume and offered invaluable guidance during the many months of its production. I would also like to thank my wife, Anna, for consulting with me regarding the complex history surrounding many of the saints, and for reading and correcting the original draft.
