The Air Witch's Dragon Page 19

Sofia beamed a smile up at him. She looked over to her small throne and a bottle of Midol appeared. Cassie was the best.

“You’re not going to be like Groffur are you? Lei Yep is close to murdering him.”

“He is older and therefore he worries like an old woman,” Ryluth said, picking her up and carrying her out the side door, directly to their wing.

“Will you have to appoint a regent while you watch the egg?” She asked, suddenly thinking of Groffur.

Ryluth smiled and shook his head. “I can do both, besides, I know this awesome air witch who can put the egg into a bubble to maintain the heat.”

Sofia giggled. She had been told it wasn’t just sitting and watching the eggs that males did once they were brought forth from the female. The eggs, born outside a Drakkos female, of which there were precious few left on the world, had to be kept at a constant heat, giving the males little opportunity to have much more than short breaks during the “Breathing the Egg” phase of Dragon development. Many years were dedicated to their young, which had become very hard for the males as they had to drop everything at their homes and businesses until the fledgling could come from the “Growing Village” located in each region, and took Human form.

For Drakkos females, they would lay a batch of eggs and wrap their warm bodies around them and the male would provide everything for her as she spent a year tending the eggs.

Sofia had learned they didn’t actually breathe fire on the eggs, but warm breath. She had been presented with a picture book of Drakkos development by Ryluth and seen illustrations of a male breathing warm air on an egg until it glowed brightly, showing the shadowed fledgling inside. She had immediately sent up a silent prayer to Threlzin that she could give Ryluth a child.

He and Coalna had come to her in a dream that night telling her that her fears of being harmed during her time in the harem were groundless. She would give Ryluth as many children as either of them desired. She had awakened with new purpose and shamelessly seduced Ryluth into enough sex to exhaust an army. He had finally laughed and rolled away from her, teasing that she had made him sore, and they both made the most of a healing bath.

And here she was, presenting them both with what they wanted most, besides each other.

“Will we have to live in the Growing Village?” She asked, not realizing that this was a holdover from no mates. She smiled when he shook his head.

“It won’t be necessary now that both parents will be present to raise the young.”

She nodded happily, noticing him opening their chamber door, then kicking it shut once they were inside. He kissed her and moaned.

“I need to declare this a holiday,” he groaned as he took her mouth and began peeling off all the damned clothes she wore that seemed like a good idea when she dressed herself, and then like the Trials of Heracles when it came time to ravage his poor mate’s body.

Sofia’s eyes closed in delight as she felt his tongue on her pulse points. “You cannot declare every time we make love a holiday, Ryluth.”

“Just every time when you’re fertile with my egg,” he said, and then his head jerked back. “Gods!” He cried out and went tearing out of the room, buck naked, running down the hall, calling for Sythe and Groffur.

Sofia leaned back on the bed and reached over for her fluffy robe so she would not be embarrassed when he returned with the Drakkos he trusted for advice from.

He ran back into the room, looking desperate, running his hands through his glorious hair and his clothes appeared on his body just as Sythe entered the room.

“Can I make love with her?” Ryluth demanded without preamble.

Sythe jerked his head back and raised his eyebrows, then slowly, his face cleared and he nodded.

“You may if you know how. And, you may even enjoy it as much as her screams tell us she does,” he said with a chuckle and walked back out of the room, closing the door with a slam.

  Sofia doubled over laughing.

“Come on, Sofia, don’t laugh like that,” he grumbled, frowning at her. “It’s not done. Once a witch becomes pregnant with our egg the sex part of the contract at an end.”

That caused Sofia to laugh harder, falling on the floor next to the bed.

“You will harm yourself and the young!” Ryluth said and pulled her up, then lay her gently on the bed, his mate still laughing at him unabated.

“Gods,” she breathed finally. “I cannot wait for you to meet your daughter,” and she fell into gales of laughter again.

“Daughter?” Ryluth nearly squeaked and then sank graciously to the rug on the floor next to the bed where he had been standing.

Sofia’s peals of laughter were heard all the way to Threlzin’s realm where he and Coalna watched their world.

“He will never live that down,” Coalna chided her mate, nuzzling his neck with her nose.

“We shall never let him forget.”
