“What did you tell him to make him come eat?” Alex asked.
“I promised Jordan we would build a Lego tower that looked like my office building. I think we have a budding architect on our hands.” David pulled out her and Dawn’s chairs, before sitting Jordan in his chair piled high with two throw pillows.
All through dinner Alex marveled at how taken with each other David and Jordan were. Of course Jorden was so loveable and affectionate, who wouldn’t love him? She didn’t picture David as such a naturally good care giver to a kid, especially a kid that wasn’t his own. She watched and listened as he spoke with her nephew and even got Dawn to join in the conversation which, Alex thought was a minor miracle.
“Alex, your quiet.” His deep voice pulled her from her thoughts.
“Just thinking.” She said.
“Well, stop that. It makes me nervous.” He mimicked her earlier statement. His eyes holding hers intently.
“Will you take a walk down to the lake with me?” David asked her.
“Yes, sure. Just let me clear away the dishes.” Alex was surprised but was all for it. She found herself wanting to be alone with David again.
“I’ll clean up.” He told her. Standing, he started putting away the dishes.
“Jordan can show me his new toys and then it’s his bath time.” Dawn told them, Jordan’s face lit up. He grabbed Dawn’s hand and tugged her towards the living room.
Alex went to grab a sweater and change into some jeans. It had been sunny the past few days but the nights were still cool. She had the one pair of jeans left in her back pack. She would have to make a decision on her life right away. After calling her band this morning, she no longer had a job. Assholes. She was the best singer they would ever find. But, she had missed a gig last night and they were pissed. Well, life kept throwing her wild pitches didn’t it. Alex shook her head. She would keep on swinging, one day she may hit one out of the park. Tonight she would not think about Mac or his stalking. She would think about David. She wanted to trust him and put herself into his safe keeping but years of instability and paranoia were hella hard to get over.
When she got back David was waiting for her by the door. He’d changed into jeans and a long sleeve T-shirt, holding some blankets over one arm. Alex inhaled deeply and walked towards David. He had waited for her answer long enough. Alex had no idea how this night would end, but she knew for certain that David expected her to have made a decision. She had made her decision. Alex hoped he could handle it.
CHAPTER FIVE
*DAVID*
They followed a short well-maintained stone pathway to the lake. David couldn’t keep his eyes off the female next to him. Alex was a petite, small-boned woman. The top of her curly head came up to his chin. Dark blue jeans hugged her curves exquisitely. Her vanilla cream and honey scent made his mouth water. She was a vision in the soft twilight, entrancing in her desirable form and quiet movements. How had he lived so long without knowing there was someone so special out there in the world?
The air was saturated with the sounds of nature. Crickets chipped there song in the distance, fish jumped and splashed in the water, and a gentle breeze made the leaves on the trees sigh a soft accompaniment. David led Alex to a grassy area near the shore, but far enough away from the house they would not be disturbed or seen easily. The surrounding trees obscured them from prying eyes. He spread one blanket on the ground, placing the other next to it.
“Just in case it gets cooler.” He told her.
David sat, holding out a hand to help Alex sit next to him. He kept hold of her warm hand, lacing his fingers with hers. They relaxed there for a few minutes enjoying the concert of the night.
“I’ve missed you the last couple of days.” Alex leaned back slightly to look at him.
Her words spiraled warmth through his chest. “I like the way you speak your mind Alex. You hold nothing back do you?”
“It’s both a blessing and a curse.” She admitted, looking away. “Some people find me hard to take.”
“It’s refreshing.” He assured her. David tucked a wayward curl behind her ear. “Don’t ever change that. It came through that night I watched you sing at the gala. Your emotions are so close to the surface. I felt what you felt as you sang.” He told her.
Alex inched closer to him. “That was beautiful. I’m glad you felt that. It is what I want to do every song I sing.” She paused and turned her golden gaze to the water. “You are a complicated man David. I hesitate say you’re emotionless because that’s not quite true. You’re great with Jordan, patient with Dawn, and so sweet to me, always. Yet, you rarely smile or joke. You’re a serious individual. You know that?”
David leaned back and contemplated her words. She could not imagine how serious he was. The sounds of the night enveloped them. The moon blinked from behind a sprinkling clouds. Alex’s warm body next to him felt right, simple, yet complicated. What could be simpler than a man being attracted to a pretty woman? David’s heart, soul, his existence altered because of Alex, now that was as complex and complicated as it gets.
“You’re thinking and you know what that does to me.” Alex glanced his way a small smile on her face, eyes shining.
“Yeah, I know. Nervous.” David told her, pulling her over between his out stretched legs. Her body cradled comfortably against his chest, as he caressed her silky smooth hands.
“I don’t know if I can explain why I am the way I am, but I want you to know me.”
Alex placed her hand over his heart. “I want to know you.” She whispered.
“My mom died of cancer when I was fourteen and Kane was twelve. Our father left us when we were small. Our mother had to work hard to keep a roof over our heads. She was a great mom.” David revealed, the pain after so many years still pulled at his heart.
“I’m so sorry David.” Alex said comfortingly. She placed one hand over his giving it a squeeze
“She couldn’t do much when the cancer was near the final stages. I had to work part time after school at a friend of the family’s store to keep us all fed. We didn’t have a lot before she got sick, but before she passed, we were surviving mostly off government assistance and what little I could bring in. We went to bed hungry a lot. I had to grow up quick, get serious, because life threw some serious shit at me. Plus Kane needed me.”
David wanted Alex to know that he understood what drove her to protect Jordan and Dawn. He had to make a way for himself and his brother all his life. Being a focused and driven person was what kept them alive.
Alex spun around in his arms. She threw her arms around his neck and pulled his head to her’s. The urgent press of her lips to his sent fire racing through his body. David gripped her tightly and dove into that kiss. She wrapped her legs around him and took him head first into ecstasy.
Alex pulled away breathing harshly. “You are one remarkable man David McAdams.” She snuggled in closer putting her head on his chest. David felt his heart pounding. One kiss and she had him about to fucking explode. Fascinating, she had him going from zero to 100 in no time flat, simply fascinating.
“What happened after your mom passed?” She asked.
“We went to live with our aunt Patty. She didn’t exactly want two boys but she took us in anyway. I don’t know why. She was a lot younger than our mom and liked to party and get high. We were in a worse situation with her than with our mom. I joined the army the day after my eighteenth birthday.” A shadow crossed his face, as if reliving some dark memory. “I regret leaving Kane with her.” He sighed and pulled Alex closer.
Kane never talked about the two years he spent with Patty. David knew something traumatic happen to his brother but no matter how hard David tried to get it out of him, Kane wouldn’t divulge. David understood the soul deep pain of leaving your sibling behind and coming back to find them damaged. Alex came back to find her sister dying. The thought of losing Kane was almost too much to bare.
“Kane joined the service when he came of age.
We hooked up with our friend Ace while in. We all three did two tours then started our security business once we got out.” He said.
David didn’t realize it but Alex was holding him in her arms rocking slowly back and forth, comforting him. Her nurturing instincts on autopilot.
“You smell divine baby.” David held on to her and couldn’t help the acceleration of his heart rate at her divine fragrance. Bending, he rubbed his cheek against her soft face and neck, biting her gently on her tender spot just below her ear. She moaned and pushed her breast into him. David turned them and pressed her back into the blanket covering her body with his.
“Alex I don’t expect anything from you that you’re not willing to give me freely, especially not as a payment for helping you. I want you because I can’t think of anything but sinking into you and making you scream my name to the heavens.”
He pulled her sweater open and nibbled her exposed shoulder. She gripped him hard with her thighs and wiggled beneath him, her every movement brushed her hot center back and forth against his throbbing cock. She was stripping him of all his hard won control.
“I may not be as expressive as you are, my song bird, but I have never in my life met a woman as caring,” He tenderly kissed her lips. “As strong,” he moved his one hand to her bottom pressing her against him. “As sexy,” He trailed kisses from her neck to her breast. He tweaked her hard nipples beneath her thin shirt. “Will you stay with me Alex?”
*ALEX*
Alex wanted to scream yes, hell yes, but David was driving her too crazy with electrified kisses across her upper body that sparked flames inside her. If she could sell his kisses, she would be an overnight millionaire. The coolness of the night caught fire, even the breeze felt hotter. She could feel his hardness at the juncture of her thighs, huge and insistent.
“Oh, David, yes please, I want more.” She begged.
“I’ll give you everything.” He told her, running his hand under the waistband of her jeans, his fingers sliding along her moist heat. He stroked along her crease stopping at her sensitive bundle of nerves to press quick wet circles there. Alex bucked off the blanket. She found it hard to get enough oxygen into her lungs. David’s lips engulfed her hard nipple, bra, shirt and all. A thick finger entered her passage. Restricted by her jeans David could only go so far, but it was enough to make Alex moaned into the night. Shit, nothing in her life had ever felt so good. Every touch of his fingers, first one then another moving in and out of her made Alex grasp him as hard as she could. She felt as if she might shoot off the blanket into that brilliant sky above her. His smoky eyes bore into hers anchoring her to the earth, to him.
“Tell me yes Allie, Tell me you want this baby.” He moaned.
“Hell yes.” She panted. “I want you David, now.” Alex didn’t have to wait more than a second. David stood, pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it. David then removed the rest of his clothing. What a splendid creature. Without his clothes all resemblance to the staunch business man vanished and in his place was a hard ass alpha male, primed and ready. Alex smiled like a kid who was about to get a treat. A very big treat. He removed a condom from his jeans, opened it and rolled it on his erect staff. As Alex watched, her mouth went dry at the sight. He was big and beautiful everywhere.
David knelt to her, taking her sweater and shirt off, his hands were quick and efficient. Soon Alex was in nothing but her black bra and panties. David leaned back and leisurely raked his gazed along her body. He smiled and Alex could tell he liked what he saw. Never a shy girl. Alex unclasped the front hooks of her bra all the while looking into his smoldering gaze.
“There not huge but I think they are pretty.” She breathed, pushing her breast up more.
“They are absolutely perfect, and just for me.” David declared, as he took one dark nipple in his mouth, biting gently, then sucking hard. Alex moaned and arched into his caress. She reached down and palmed his pulsing erection and guided him to her waiting entrance.
David nudged her hand away as he moved away from her breast tasting her down her body. His fingers sought out her aching core. With gentle fingers he stroked her wet heat. Alex’s hips moved with each stroke. His lips replaced his hands. His tongue thrilled her with long slow swipes up and down, as he opened her with his fingers to penetrate her core. He moaned into her slick lips.
Grabbing his hair, Alex pulled him closer. David bit and licked her with abandon. Alex was writhing beneath him now. His fingers entered her and his tongue stroked her sensitive bundle of nerves above. Alex felt the roll of her orgasm start at her toes and race its way up her body. His name left her lips on a strangled cry as she came and came.
“You’re so perfect, baby.” David moaned, looming was over her. He kissed her tenderly as he slid into her body.
Alex felt him stretching her. He pushed in then out again with powerful strokes that touched every quaking nerve in her throbbing sex.
“David.” She sang over and over as he took her right to the point of fulfilment then slowed down. He took her lips and moaned into her mouth. His big body rocked into hers with increasing force until she knew she would burn to ash.
David pushed up onto his arms and increased the rhythm of his hips. He took her hard, his gray eyes never leaving her face, as if daring her to look away. She would know who was taking her. She was spellbound in his gaze.
Alex could feel her heart making a desperate attempt to break free of her chest as he slammed into her over and over again. She bucked and cried out, spasm after spasm rocked her slender frame and as the last shutters of her orgasm left her body she heard David shout her name then tense. He came hard inside her. Alex ran her hands along his sleek bunching muscles and kissed his sweat damped shoulder. David rolled to his side and slid off the condom. He entwined her legs with his and covered them with the extra blanket, hugging her close to his chest as it rapidly rose and fell against her cheek.
Alex lay there in David’s arms as hot tears began to fall. She didn’t know why the tears came. It was as if some cell inside her had been blown open and she was set free. She wasn’t weighed down by sorrow or fear. For this night she was a woman sharing herself with a man.
“David” She whispered. “I’ll stay with you.”
“That makes me happy Allie. I promise I will protect you with my life.” David promised. He kissed her shoulder and pulled the extra blanket around them.
*ALEX*
The sunshine felt good on her skin. Alex sat on a giant towel by the lake, she adjusted the strap of her sea green bikini top. David had produced the swim ware from a stash he kept for guest. Alex was a little surprised by the number of women’s suits the brothers had in their possession, but Kane pointed out they used the Lake house as well as loaned it out to clients.
It felt good to be out in the sun, Alex couldn’t remember the last time she had a chance to relax. Dawn was sitting next to her. It was a warm day, one of the last she was sure. Winter would be there soon and she was glad David and Kane asked them to the lake for a day of relaxation.
Loud splashes and whoops came from the water where Kane played with Jordan. Jordan’s happy laughter warmed her heart.
Alex looked over to David as he unpacked their lunch on a nearby picnic table. The memory of them making love here last night made her smile. She felt hot and excited just looking at him. David wore a pair of white swimming trunks that emphasized his tan skin and clung to his thick thighs. He had just gotten out of the lake with Jordan and Kane and water glistened on his hard body. He looked at ease and dare she say it, happy.
Alex felt a tightness in her chest, she couldn’t pull her eyes away from him. David turned from what he was doing as if he could sense her, and smiled. Damn that smile, she loved it. She loved him. Alex quickly turned away from him, her heart beat doubling in her chest. How could she love David? It had just been a few days. Yet she had feelings for him she never had for any other man.
“Alexandrea.” Dawn’s voice broke her attention
away from David.
“Oh, I’m sorry D.” I was thinking about something.” Alex” turned to her.
“You have been thinking about that something all day.” Dawn teased, turning to watch Jordan and Kane. A look of sadness crossed her face. “I get the feeling we are not leaving.” She pulled her gaze back to Alex.
“I wanted to talk to you about that. I think we should stay and let David and Kane do what they can to help us.” Alex said cautiously, not sure of Dawn’s response.
Dawn simply nodded her head. “Jordan is so happy here. I don’t know if I trust these men, but they are kind to him and that says a lot.”
“I have a feeling that if Mac tried anything they could handle him. They have experience in keeping people safe and we need that.”
“I see the way you look at David. I’ve known you all my life and have never known you to take so much interest in a man before. I don’t want you to be hurt Alli.” Dawn placed her hand on Alex’s arm.
“We have been on the run from a maniac killer for so long. I feel safe and normal with him. I like that. I want that for all of us.” Alex sighed and focused her gaze on the three males in the water. David had Jordan showing him how to float and Kane was swimming out to a huge rock in the middle of the lake.
“I want normal too, but I have a feeling normal is a long way off for us.” Dawn was wearing an oversized t-shirt over her emerald green one piece swim suit, as she turned away, the shirt slipped down her shoulder and upper back. Alex noticed circular scars on Dawn’s back. They looked like cigarette burns.
Alex grabbed Dawn’s arm. “Dawn, Mac gave you those burns didn’t he?”
“Yeah.” Dawn pulled her shirt over the burns, turning her face away. “That and a lot more Allie. More than I want you to know. More than anyone should know.”
“I want to help you. I love you D.” Alex grabbed Dawn’s hands squeezing.
