After everyone had their piece of the wedding cake, I looked around and was pleased to see that Sara and Clara had retreated to a side table and Clara was showing the sketches she’d brought in her bag. From the look upon Sara’s face, I could tell that she was thrilled. Clara though, seemed to be slightly shell-shocked, which made me giggle. Yes, Sara can be quite overwhelming, when you first meet her!
Several more toasts and the tossing of the bouquet and garter later, Peter stole me away for a walk in the moonlit gardens outside of the clubhouse. I readily agreed and as we were leaving by the back door, Karen and Robert appeared and asked to join us.
The day had been long, but each part of it had been special and as we walked in the moonlight, we each recalled different aspects of the day. When we reached the small dock overlooking one of the ponds on the property, we all stopped and I noticed Robert stepping behind Karen, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest.
I was so full of love and joy that I didn’t give a second thought to voicing the thought running through my head. “So, when are you guys going to follow in our footsteps and tie the knot?”
The minute the words left my mouth, a palpable tension filled the space around us. Robert stiffened and withdrew his arms from around Karen, taking a step backwards. Ups, I guess, I got him on the wrong foot!
But before anyone could say a word, Clara and Sara appeared besides us, absorbed in their conversation. Robert quickly regained his composure, gave Karen a kiss and murmured “We’ll see.”
When they saw us, Clara came running up to me and hugged me with such a force that I feared she’d break my bones.
“Rachel! I’m going to New York!”
