I’m also incredibly proud of John. “Halfway through law school, and you’re still standing,” I say, having witnessed him pulling more all-nighters than I think anyone should have to do in a lifetime.
“The end is definitely now in sight,” he says with a crooked smile.
“Morgan and Chad might actually understand what a lawyer is once you graduate.”
“They’re growing like weeds. Seriously, what are your dad and Liz feeding them?”
“Love?” I say as seriously as I can before bursting out into giggles.
“Funny girl, but we’re pretty damn lucky to have those kids in our lives too.”
“Beyond lucky. And they love you,” I say, grateful Liz and Dad had agreed to let me join them in explaining that I was their biological mother, a talk that went well and is now just part of our story. They still call me their big sister, and they call John their big brother and love climbing over him like he’s a living, breathing jungle gym.
“And I love them, and I love you… so much.” His next kiss is on my lips, his hands finding their way around my breasts, my hip.
“You are truly insatiable,” I tease him.
“I can’t help myself,” he says. “Hopefully you won’t object to round… let’s see… five? Or is it six?”
“I’m not sure I can keep track,” I say with a laugh, “but I don’t object… not one bit.”
And then our bodies are together again, connecting and melding, and it’s beautiful, so very beautiful. In my heart I know we’ll be okay for a very long time, maybe even forever. With the way John makes me feel, I can’t help but to believe in things like that… in heaven… in love eternal.
