And there was just something about being cocooned in that water world, just floating and watching the colorful and unusual marine life float by. It made her feel free. Zoey’s whole life now made her feel free. And very, very lucky.

“Lilith, I’m afraid you’re right that Esmeralda would not knowingly provide you with assistance. Did you really have to burn her house down? But that is done, and her opinion of you is unlikely to change. I hope, though, that you can see it is only to your benefit for Zoey, and also Wanda, to befriend her. She dislikes Fiona and Zelda and is likely to keep a watchful eye on them. Which may one day bring you the evidence that you need.”
“I suppose. How is it that all other murders in this town are so quickly solved? And the trail for mine grows cold.”
“To kill Lilith Hazelwood is quite a triumph. Forgive me. I’m simply trying to see things from the vantage point of the killer. We can only hope that the desire to brag about her conquest will be her undoing.”
“Justice unfolds too slowly. Each of these girls has been somewhat useful. They gather information from one suspect at a time. But I need to interrogate the entire witch population of this town. I need someone who can read minds and uncover secrets.”
“Well, we haven’t found a mind reader yet.”
“I was able to read minds very well. It was a great talent of mine. I don’t see why one of the young ladies shouldn’t be able to use it to her advantage.”
“But . . . in which part of your body did those powers lie?”
“The doctor is running out of organs. I think we shall soon find out,” Lilith said with grim certainty.
