“As I tire of your inabilities to complete the simplest of tasks. Had you just killed Three Fingers, none of this would have been necessary.”
“Yeah, well, had you not been greedy and looking beyond your station, your pathetic vengeance wouldn’t have even been necessary,” I replied, anger and complete disgust with the entirety of this whole fiasco finally reaching my maximum.
“Why, you little...” McCray drew back the hammer on his .32, black death filling his eyes, and I knew I had gone too far.
Without warning I suddenly sneezed, spittle flying straight into his face, the trigger going off. The bullet whizzed sideways. The next sound I heard as my sneeze brought my head down was the heavy bang of shotgun fire. Deafening silence and a burning ringing filled my ears. I felt blood splatter the top of my head, the back of my neck. Heard the gasping, gurgling croak of “No!”
Looking up, I watched, amazed as McCray stood clutching the hole that gaped in his belly, the bloody, gory entrails of his innards hanging in a mangled mess. Then he just crumpled to the floor. Dead.
“Jesus H., Nan! How many times have I told you not to do that?” I bellowed, swinging around to catch the barrel of Nan’s smoking gun still clutched to her side. I ran to her then, tears rolling down both of our faces as we clung to each other.
“Here I thought it was the good-looking gangster that got the girl and saved the day,” Collin said as he sauntered up beside us.
“Don’t you worry, boy,” Nan told him, handing me over to him. “You’re getting the girl, all right. For a bit longer than you may have anticipated.”
“As luck would have it, that works just fine with me, ma’am,” Collin said with a bright-eyed smile.
