The Billionaire's Dark Desire - Episode 1 - The Invitation Page 2

by K. C. Hunter

  “He said he would consider–”

“He’s not going to consider anything unless you accept that invitation.”

“You really want me to go off to a Greek island for the weekend with a man I don’t even know?”

Marsha’s voice rose to a furious shriek. “Don’t even know? What do you mean you don’t even know?”

Cora glanced through the glass windows of the conference room. Those walking past or at their desks glanced curiously at them.

“He’s Acheron Thanatos!” Marsha exclaimed, her eyes comically wide. “One of the richest men in the world. Everybody knows who he is!”

Cora picked up her phone and tablet. She tried to hide the fact her hands were shaking. During her brief tenure at the firm she’d gone out of her way not to give Marsha any cause to be angry with her. She’d witness what happened to those who did.

“Knowing who he is isn’t the same as….knowing who he is,” she finished lamely.

Marsha walked over and stood in front of Cora. Then she slammed her hand down on the table, which made Cora jump.

“I don’t care if you don’t know him from Adam,” Marsha said through gritted teeth. “Do you have any idea what securing him as a client would do for this firm? Or does that not matter to you?”

“Of course it does. But I won’t–” Cora stopped and bit her lip.

“You won’t what? What do you mean?”

Cora looked away from Marsha. She had no idea what she meant. She honestly didn’t believe someone like Acheron would be interested in her sexually. She was nowhere near as beautiful as the women he usually dated. Maybe he was just being nice inviting her to his villa.

But then again maybe he was the kind of man who took perverse pleasure bedding nobodies like her. Maybe a notch on his bed post was just a notch. Didn’t matter who or how he got it.

“Maybe someone else would be better suited to work with Mr. Thanatos,” Cora finally said, hoping that passing the ball off to another of the firm’s attorneys would get her off the hook.

Marsha shot her an irritated look. “He doesn’t want anyone else. He made that quite clear. He wants you.”

“But why does he want me?” Cora couldn’t help blurting. It made absolutely no sense. She’d had an adolescent crush on him back when he was the lead singer of Lethe. But she’d been just one of millions of fans. She’d never even gone so far as to write a fan letter. Why did he want her when he could have his pick of dozens of more qualified lawyers at the firm?

Marsha crossed her arms over her chest. “I don’t know why he wants you. It certainly escapes me. Perhaps you should ask him. This weekend.”

Before Cora could respond to that, the door opened and one of the secretaries leaned in.

“Excuse me, Ms. Stearn,” she said. “I apologize for the interruption but it's Mr. Haskins. He's holding for you.”

Marsha glared at the secretary who quickly hurried away. Then she turned back to Cora. “If you value your future at this firm, you’d better just reconsider that invitation.”

Turning sharply on her heel, Marsha left the conference room. After she left, Cora went over to the window that made up one wall of the room. She stared out at the city and chewed her lower lip. An old habit from high school that only manifested itself when she was worried.

It would be easy enough, she supposed, just to accept Acheron's offer. But there were plenty of reasons not to. Chief among them was Marsha's chauvinistic treatment of her. It was bad enough being paraded in front of male clients like some kind of sexual hors d'oeuvre. But to be expected to spend the weekend with a possible client? Even if Acheron was above board, and there honestly was nothing to his invitation, everyone at the firm would hear about it, and the whispers would start to circulate that Cora Radford was climbing the legal ladder with her legs wide open.

She knew she was risking her future at Haskins, Stearn and Macaulay. But she'd be damned if she was going to let Marsha Stearn pander her out. But what about her own reaction to Acheron? Why had she felt such a strong attraction to him? He was very sexy and captivatingly handsome, but there had been something more. Something so strong it nearly displaced all her feelings of resentment regarding Marsha’s vulgar expectations.

Cora shook her head. No, whatever she’d imagined had been just that. Her imagination. She had no idea why Acheron was interested in her in the first place or why he wanted her to visit him at his villa. And she had no intention on finding out. He was, most likely, just bored and, for some reason, playing some kind of a game with her, Marsha and the firm.

Cora looked down at the card he’d given her. It was cream-colored with gold edges. The number on it was an international phone number though she didn’t know for which country. She glanced at the wastebasket in the corner. Then she released a breath and slid the card into her tablet’s case.

She turned away from the window, left the conference room and headed for her office. She had a legal brief she needed to finish this afternoon. Marsha would be very angry, of course, over her refusal to visit Acheron but she’d get over it eventually.

At least Cora hoped she did.

The last thing she wanted to have to do was look for another job.
