The Bitter End Page 21

  Paul nodded.

Rake looked steadily at Paul. ‘We need to tell you something. The splinters from the bust – they seemed superficial, at first. But since then every one of those politicians has been behaving crazily. They’re making bad decisions, as if they’re deliberately antagonising other countries. Believe me, world peace seems to be taking a downward spiral.’

Paul rested his head back on his pillow, understanding now. Lamia’s hatred wasn’t just for him, it was for everyone, the whole of mankind.

‘She’s working for the devil,’ he managed to croak. ‘She wants to destroy everyone. And I think I know her name.’

Rake stared at him. ‘You do?’

  ‘I think it’s Lamia.’

‘I believe you, Paul,’ Rake said softly. ‘But we’re not going to sit by and let it happen. There’s a special team at HQ being set up to look into the phenomena. We need you well, Paul. We need you to tell us all you know. We’ll destroy it, but we need your help.’

They both stared at him, waiting for his answer.

Though it hurt to move, he nodded.

  ‘Good man.’

‘Yes, he is a good man.’

Sally’s voice. Sally’s sweet voice right here in his room. His eyes flicked from right to left, trying to see beyond Rake and Fitzpatrick who were huddled around him.

They moved aside and he saw his lovely Sally walk into his line of vision.

He uttered a cry, wanting to reach out and hold her, and tell her how sorry he was.

She sat beside him on the bed.

Through eyes blurred with tears, he managed to rasp out some speech.

  ‘Sal, so sorry.’

‘You have nothing to be sorry for, Paul. It wasn’t you. I knew it wasn’t you.’

Very gently, she took his bandaged hand in hers, and brought it to her lips.
