  Chapter 1

Teyana stood in the mirror assessing the bruises that her so called fiancé, Tyriq, left on her face and arms yet again. The abuse was coming more and more as the years went on. Being with Tyriq for eight years with a five year old son named Camari, Teyana knew she deserved better than Tyriq; if not for her, then for her son.

This time he came home mad because he didn’t make much money off his nickel and dime hustling weed and she couldn’t understand why he even tried to sell it. He smoked more weed than he actually sold and then would be expecting her to pay for what he smoked when it was time to re-up. Unfortunately, Tyriq was all she knew, he was her first everything. First boyfriend, first love and she even gave him her virginity.

The abuse started around Camari’s second birthday. First it started with pushes and slams against the wall, that slowly turned to slaps which quickly became punches. Teyana was looking for a way out, but where would she go? She had money saved and it was for days like this but she had hope that Tyriq would changeso she wouldn’t need to go into it. She didn’t think he was gonna stay like this forever but until he got his shit together, where was she going to go and he not be able to find her? Her parent’s and her best friend’s, Sevyn, house was going to be the first place Tyriq came looking for her.

Teyana was a bank manager. She was paid well but taking care of all the bills, plus her and Camari needs, along with whatever bullshit Tyriq brought home for the week, it seemed like she was barely making it.

The ringing of Teyana’s Galaxy Note 3 brought her back to the present. Looking at the phone she saw it was her best friend, Sevyn. Sevyn could always tell when something wasn’t right with Teyana, which was the bond they shared as friends since the sixth grade.

“Hello?” Teyana spoke solemnly into the phone

“Hey, girlie, what you up to?” Sevyn sang into the phone

“Nothing. Packing up some clothes for me and Camari. I’m gonna stay in a hotel for a few nights, I need a break.” Teyana spoke trying to stop the tears that were threatening to fall.

“Aw, Tee, baby, you don’t have to put up with that mess. You and my godson are welcome to stay here until you find another place. You can do better than that bullshit Tyriq is putting you through. Camari doesn’t need to see his father beating his mother every chance he gets.”

Teyana knew what Sevyn was saying was true and this shit was getting old but Sevyn never judged Teyana for staying with Tyriq though. Sevyn was always there to help nurse the bruises and cry with her friend. She always offered her place and when Teyana was tired, she would leave. Only Teyana knew when enough was enough.

“Sevyn, you know your place will be the first place Tyriq ass will come looking for me.” Truth was, Teyana had contemplated going there but she didn’t want to bring that trouble to Sevyn and her husband’s, Zywon, doorstep.

“I wish Tyriq would bring that bullshit to you at my house. If I don’t lay his ass out then Zy surely will,” Sevyn said.

Zy, whose real name was Zywon, was Sevyn’s husband of 10 years. He treated Teyana as a little sister and would do anything she asked him to. Zywon was that nigga in ATL. He an
d his cousin ran everything, from ATL back up to NY. So, Tyriq would never step to Zywon doorstep with no bullshit, he knew the consequences. At the same time, when it came to Teyana and Camari, Tyriq was known to do some dumb shit.

“That’s what I don’t want, Sevyn, y’alldon’t need that drama. I just want to get away for a few days and spend some time with Camari. Plus, you know he ain’t going to just let me leave with Camari. I am just going to stay in a hotel for a few days, call the bank and move some money out my trust fund to hold me over while I figure this out. You know I truly appreciate your invite. I love you.”

“It’s nothing, Teyana, but please don’t stay too long. Next time he could go further than an eye jammy and kill you. I can’t nurse you back from death and I damn sure ain’t trying to bury you,” Sevyn said. She hated to see her friend hurt like this, but she couldn’t help her until she wanted to be helped.

“I know. I promise I will take care of it and I will let you know what hotel I am staying at.” Teyana and Sevyn talked for a few more minutes before Teyana ended the call so that she could pack.

Teyana was glad that Camari was sleeping when Tyriq came home tripping. While she was moving in and out each room, grabbing things they would need, she peeked in Camari’s room to make sure he was still sleeping.

While she was packing, she dialed the bank and let the automated system give her a balance inquiry. The automated system told her thatthe balance was a little over thirty thousand dollars, so she transferred over three grand. Then, she went online to find a comfortable hotel for her and Camari to stay in for a few nights. She headed to Camari’s room and packed one bag for his clothes and another for all the toys he would need for the next few days.

As she was bringing the last bag downstairs to the door, her cab pulled up. She opted to leave her car because Tyriq wouldn’t do anything but call OnStar to have them locate the car. After loading the bags, she hopped in the backseat with her son and never looked back. She was going to enjoy her peace of mind for the next few days. She needed to spend some quality time with Camari anyway. Once she got checked into the hotel, she went online and booked a car with Enterprise Rental Car Company. They came, picked her and Camari up from the hotel, and took her back to the place, where she did the necessary paperwork for the rental car. She decided that she and Camari would grab a late dinner from Famous Daves to take back to the hotel and an hour later she was headed back to her room to lay down and get some rest before she headed to Sevyn house later that evening.

  Chapter 2

Terrean ‘Gambino’ Rose, walked into his cousin’s, Zywon, barbershop like a boss, his swag was demanding attention from everyone. He greeted everyone as he made his way to the back where Zywon office was located. If you didn’t know him, you couldn’t tell that he wasn’t from ATL but from upstate New York; Buffalo to be exact.

Gambino and Zywon ran the biggest drug empire across the country and the demand in the ATL was becoming larger so Gambino found himself making this trip more frequently. He was seriously thinking about relocating to the A, this was where all his money was being made, anyway.

“What’s up, Fam?” greeted Gambino as he walked inside Zywon’s office. He was ending a phone call, Gambino knew it was his wife, Sevyn, because he said he loved her right before hanging up.

“Aye, what’s up, Youngblood? When you get here?” asked Zywon as he walked around his desk to embrace his first cousin on his mother side in a brotherly hug.

Zywon was the eldest between the two, but only by a few months. They were thick as thieves before Zywon moved to ATL and they stayed into some shit. You didn’t see one without the other, in fact, they were so close that people often mistook them for brothers.

“I got in late last night. Jazz was sleepy so we went straight to the hotel.”

Zywon shook his head. He’d never really cared for his cousin’s girlfriend, Jazmine. It was like one minute she was cool then the next minute she was acting like a total bitch.

“So, how is business going up north?” asked Zywon as he took a seat behind his desk. Gambino took a seat in one of the chairs in front.

“It’s going good. Niggas holding shit down up there,” Gambino answered. Zywon nodded his head up and down, pleased with his cousin answer.

“That’s what I like to hear, but you know like I know, all the money is down here. I don’t know why you just won’t make that move, cuz. You said yourself that our goons is holding shit down up there.”

It was like Zywon knew exactly what was running through his cousin head. Now all Gambino had to do was run the shit by his girlfriend of seven years, Jazmine. He didn’t know how she would feel about it but he thought they both could use a change. Maybe things would get better once they left New York.

In years, Gambino hadn’t loved Jazmine; not like a man should love his significant other. Yea, it would’ve been easy to walk away, but Jazmine always made it hard for him to do just that. The one thing she held over his head would always fuck with him to the point that he could never turn his back on her.

“I’m gonna talk to Jazz and see how she feels about that. Shit, I been ready to make a move,” Gambino replied.

Zywon got up and they hit hands across the desk.

“That’s what the fuck I like to hear,” he said excitedly.

The guys talked for a little while longer before heading up front. Gambino got a fresh cut while he was there before heading back to the hotel. He was planning on talking to Jazmine about the move once he got in there. The sooner, the better!

  **********

Gambino was walking to the elevator in the hotel he was staying at, when he felt someone bump into his leg. He looked down and saw a little boy looking up at him. It caused Gambino to smile.

“See, Camari, I told you to watch were you’re going, sweetie,” said Teyana. She then looked at Gambino and gave a weak smile. “I’m sorry about that,” she apologized.

“It’s okay. I think this belongs to you little man.” He held out the ball he’d picked up and handed it to Camari.

“Say ‘thank you’,” Teyana said to her son and Camari did as he was told.

Gambino couldn’t help but notice how beautiful she was, even with a bruised face she was gorgeous. Catching himself staring at her a little too long, Gambino shook his head just as Teyana was apologizing again.

“No need to apologize, ma. It’s all good,” he smiled.

Teyana nodded her head, grabbed her son’s hand and strolled on to her room, Gambino did the same. On the elevator, he recited the words he would say to Jazmine to get her to agree to move to ATL permanently with him.

Shit. I’m moving with or without her, Gambino thought to himself as he exited the elevator.

  Chapter 3

Jazz was sitting in the hotel room mad as usual. She was always mad. She didn’t understand that when Gambino came to ATL it was for business purposes and not to entertain her. This is why he never wanted her to come but he couldn’t fart if she wasn’t there to sniff his ass.

To Jazz, she was being his down ass bitch by coming with him while he handled his drug business. She had no clue what a down ass bitch was obviously. Jazz grew up privileged, so she had no clue what it was like to get down and dirty in the streets. That is what attracted Gambino to her. She was sheltered and he did all he could to keep her that way, but ever since the loss of their baby, it was becoming harder and harder. She threw the death of their unborn child up in his face every chance she got. She thought she would make him feel guilty enough to do one of two things if not both. He would either, leave the game for good and try to start a family with her, or he would marry her and slowly get out the game. She didn’t understand that she was only pushing him further away.

When Gambino walked in the hotel room, she immediately started in on him.

“Where the fuck you been all day? You didn’t even see if I wanted to join you or go do my own thing. You just left me sitting in this hotel all damn day.”

&nbs
p; Gambino walked right past her as if she wasn’t talking to him and headed to the shower. For some reason, the girl he had just seen on the elevator was on his mind. He couldn’t believe that someone had bruised her pretty little face.

Jazz walked in the bathroom, with even more attitude. She was livid that he had walked in and not acknowledged her. She was about to learn that all that nagging and complaining she was doing was making it easier for Gambino to leave her ass right in Buffalo and move down without her.

“Terrean, I know you heard me. Why do you bring me here and just to leave me locked up in this hotel?” He truly hated when she called him by his government, it made his skin crawl.

“Jazz, don’t start this shit. You know when I come to ATL, it’s strictly business. I have dinner with my cousin and his girl the night before we leave and that’s that. You never come to dinner because you swear Sevyn be eyeing me. You too insecure and my cousin and his girl shouldn’t have to feel insecure in their own damn house. You don’t like my cousin and the feeling is mutual. For you to ask me to take you around them is selfish of you,” Gambino said in one breath.

“I ain’t asking you to take me around them assholes, I want to spend time with you and outside of this hotel room. Damn, let’s go to dinner, a movie, shopping or something. I’m tired of always being locked up in rooms, You should just leave me at home.”

“Jazz, you know, for you to be so smart, yo’ ass is dumb. I NEVER ASKED YOU TO COME WITH ME. I TELL YOU I’M HEADING OUT OF TOWN AND YO’ ASS ALWAYS PACK A BAG. If I say no, you can’t come, you throw a hissy fit and tell me I don’t care about you. Then, you throw the fact that I wasn’t there when them clowns killed my seed like I sent them there to do it. I can’t take this shit no more, Jazz!” Gambino said
