Saying goodbye had been difficult, though. Everyone had met us at the airport to say goodbye. Frank and my mom to take a separate flight back home; Mack and Jake to just send us off on our trip to the Bahamas. Jake was the only one who knew the plan, but it had been just as hard to say goodbye to him...even though he had assured us that he would find a way to visit once all the heat had died down.
Then we’d left, me bawling my eyes out at having to lose so many people that I loved and Damon quiet as he calmed me. His fingers were never far from my stomach as he touched the place where our children were growing...of course, at that time, I had thought it was only one.
“What about the news?” I asked.
“The trial has come to a close and it seems like a pretty bad gang were found guilty for conspiracy, murder, racketeering, drug trafficking, and a dozen other charges.”
“Really?” I asked as I stood up, my long skirt swirling around my ankles as I moved towards him. I wrapped my arms around his neck and stared out at the ocean stretching out in front of us. Living in Costa Rica was wonderful, and I loved the warmth and the sun.
And I loved being with Damon every single day. We explored the local area, went on short vacations out of the country, and just loved each other. I had started writing a novel and Damon was exploring his interest with boating and scuba diving. We spent our days making love or exploring our love.
I kissed his neck and peered over his shoulder to read the newspaper he was viewing on his tablet. “Says that they are all going away for a very long time,” I said. “Thanks to the evidence you provided.”
He nodded, “Yes, seems like the packets found the proper people.”
I smiled and kissed his ear. After we’d arrived in the Bahamas for our honeymoon, we’d spent the first week just acting like the newlyweds that we were. The final week, we’d set up our deaths so that no one would think it looked unusual or suspicious.
Around the end of the honeymoon, Damon had rented a boat for a sunset tour of the water. But the boat had never made it back to the dock and our bodies had never been found. One of Jake’s contacts had met our boat and helped us onto it. Then he’d taken us to shore where we slipped away as Mr. and Mrs. Jonathon Brand.
When we didn’t return, a search party was sent out for the boat. They found it, but it was clear that we’d been lost at sea. They’d looked for our bodies for weeks before declaring that we were deceased. During those weeks, I’d watched the news eagerly. Saw the interview with my mom and Frank and cried as I saw the utter heartbreak on their faces.
I’d dialed their number hundreds of times—hanging up each time before it rang, though. Damon had kept me busy, and we’d finally settled in Costa Rica after we’d spent time in Europe and island hopping in an effort to stay unnoticed.
Jake had handled our wills, which we’d had changed shortly before we were married. It hadn’t looked strange to the authorities because it made sense to update our wills before our life-changing marriage. Jake had been an executor and he’d sent a few emails to a “friend” about how it was a lot of work, but slowly he was getting our estate resolved.
It had been a lot to ask of Jake, but he’d been the only one we could ask. Everyone else would wonder about the charity that was set up for the money. They’d wonder about everything that we had put in our will. He’d sent the occasional email about how my mom and Frank were taking our deaths. He’d been a big support for them and he’d been happy to do it.
The only other emails he’d sent was to complain about Mack. For some reason, she’d thrown herself into finding us when we’d gone missing and she’d wanted input on the funeral arrangements. As far as I knew, they were still fighting things out...or maybe they weren’t now that nearly six months had passed since we’d died.
One thing that we’d never thought about was the packet that Damon had created as insurance. Before he could do anything, the packets had been mailed out by the lawyer who had them. They’d been sent to all of the major news stations and the FBI...the media had erupted in a flurry of activity as, one by one, the members of the gang were hunted down and arrested. Some of them fought being arrested and ended up being killed or killing themselves, but every last one that hadn’t been killed were captured.
I smiled at the headlines and asked, “So it is finally over?”
Damon nodded. “Yes, it is finally over. We are free to live a life together without worry of some bad man coming to hurt us.”
I pulled my arms away from Damon, and my eyes filled with tears as I walked to the edge of our patio. I stared out at the beautiful, sparkling blue expanse and sighed. We didn’t have to run any longer and maybe, just maybe, we could tell our parents after the babies were born. We could sit them down and explain Damon’s past and why we’d done what we had.
Even though I missed them, a part of me wanted to just let them live out their lives without knowing the truth. I didn’t want to break the peace that Damon and I were finally enjoying together. I felt, rather than heard, Damon walk up behind me. Then his arms were wrapped around my waist, his hands pressed against my belly.
He leaned down and kissed the side of my neck, causing gooseflesh to rise on my bare skin. Despite feeling as large as a whale, my body reacted to Damon’s touch and I always felt like the most beautiful woman on the planet.
“You know how much I love you,” he said as he kissed my neck again. I leaned back against him, loving his touch as he trailed kisses down my throat.
I sighed at the feel of his hard shaft pressing into my back. “Yes, I know how much you love me.”
He turned me in his arms, his eyes searching mine. “Truly.”
“Truly,” I said softly and then I planted a kiss to his lips. It was a soft kiss...one that held so much love and passion for him, but one that was patient and ready for him to explore the cavern of my mouth. I shuddered as his tongue swept inside of mine and sparred with my tongue.
When he broke free after a few minutes, I sighed and laid my head against his chest. “I love you, too, Damon,” I said.
“But you still worry,” he said for me and I nodded against him. Despite knowing that all those men were behind bars or dead, I still worried about them finding out that we were alive. Would my children end up like I did...with a dead father?
He pulled me closer and laid a kiss to each eyelid. “You don’t have to worry any longer,” he said between each kiss. “They don’t know where we are and they think that we are dead. The future is for us and not for the men from my gang.”
I nodded my head and smiled up at him. I could see the future shining brightly in his eyes, and I knew that he was right. The future was ours and with our children, we were going to have a very bright one. “I know, Damon,” I sighed, but it was a happy sound. I pulled away from him and walked towards our house.
“Make love to me,” I said as I turned around. I slowly undid my top and allowed it to fall to the ground. Damon’s eyes filled with passion and a smile spread across his face.
He took a step towards me and said, “Let’s go and make each other happy.”
