Ricochet's Rogue (Agent of Mercy, Book Three) Page 28

“You’d better say yes,” Sam said. “’Cause I’m gonna be out of commission for a while. These guys need a woman to keep them in line.”

That’s right, she thought to herself. She’d been ill. Was today her doctor appointment?

“Are you okay, Sam?” God, don’t let it be serious.

  “I’m great. I’m pregnant.”

A collective breath was taken by everyone in the room.

“I knew it,” Gunner said with a cocky grin on his face.

“Oh my God, Sam. I’m so happy for you.” Hannah ran to her and hugged her tightly.

Boomer kissed her on the forehead and Ricochet hugged her so tightly Ronnie thought he’d break her. Both men had tears in their eyes.

“That is the best news ever.” Ronnie took her hands and looked into her eyes. She was truly happy. If the eyes were the windows to the soul, Sam’s soul was beaming with a brilliant light.

“Uncle Walt, are you okay?” Sam asked him.

  “A baby. You’re gonna have a baby. I’m gonna be a…”

“A grandfather,” Sam said as a tear rolled down her cheek. “You will be the grandfather, just as you’ve been my father.”

Ronnie choked back her own tears as she watched the man struggle with his emotions. Suddenly, his face went blank and he looked directly at Kong. They all followed his gaze. Kong still sat still and quiet.

“I’m gonna be a dad,” he whispered.

“How do you feel about that, buddy?” Boomer asked slowly.

“I feel like, like I’m gonna burst.” He looked up at Boomer and Ricochet. “I made a kid.”

  “Yes, you did,” Ricochet laughed.

He suddenly jumped up from the chair, picked Sam up and swung her around. “We made a kid. You and me. We’re gonna be parents. That explains all the sickness, the constant eating, the fainting. Wait. The fainting. Is that part of it?”

“Apparently. The doctor said it happens to some people. I, on the other hand, think it was someone trying to keep me from doing too much.”

“Why didn’t they tell you?” Boomer asked.

“Because some things need to happen the old fashioned way. Finding out on my own, dealing with it on my own. It’s just the natural way of things and I wouldn’t change it.”

“Who are they?” Ronnie leaned over and asked Ricochet.

  “I’ll explain later.”

“Well, not that I want to draw the spotlight away from you but I have an announcement to make too.” Boomer said picking up Raya. “The papers came through before we left,” he told Hannah.

  “What papers?” Ricochet asked.

“Adoption papers. Raya’s gonna be mine, officially.”

Hoots and hollers filled the room. Hannah and Sam cried, the men shook hands and Rogue and Gunner and Dragon backed out of the picture. This was their family moment.

“Where are you three going?” Kong asked.

  “We’ll let you all celebrate.”

“Hold it right there. Are you three not part of the W&S team?”

Gunner and Dragon nodded their heads.

“Veronica?” Ricochet asked with a touch of pleading in his voice.

What the hell, she loved it here. The people were great and the work was honest. “Yes, I am.”

“Then you all get in here and celebrate with us,” Kong shouted.

Ricochet pulled her away from the crowd and kissed her hard on the lips. As bone tired as she was the fire he ignited burned hot in her gut.

“I love you, baby. And after we take a vacation, you’re gonna move in with me and we’re gonna start our own life together. You have any problems with that?”

  “Just one.”

  “Okay, what is it?”

He looked like he was preparing for a fight. She could feel his muscled bunch in his arms.

“Do I have to wait until after we get back to move in?”

He tossed his head back, laughing hard and loud. “Life with you is gonna be fun.”
