“What did you say?”
Lily held a hand out to him. Jack rose. “It’s Lily. Don’t you see her?”
“I do, Jack. She’s lovely.” Sarah’s voice held a tinge of awe.
Why was she here? Why now, when he’d found another to love? When he was happy again? Was Lily warning him away from Sarah?
He glanced from Lily to his new wife, who stood beside him. Sarah’s smile, as she reached out a hand to Lily, was beautiful.
What the hell was going on here?
“She’s saying good-bye.”
Jack turned his attention away from Sarah and back to the vision of Lily. “How do you know?”
“She told me.” Sarah took his hand, squeezed his fingers, and rested her head on his shoulder.
A familiar, loving voice came to him.
“I’m happy. It’s all right for you to be happy.” Lily blew him a kiss. “I love you, Jack Billabard.” Her words came as a whisper as she faded away.
He didn’t know whether to scream, howl, or cry. Maybe all three. Before he chased after the elusive vision, another appeared.
A man and woman held hands. Her long golden hair flowed down her back. The man held a rifle at his side. A boy on the cusp of manhood stood beside him. A young girl appeared and held the woman’s hand. One by one, more girls came into the scene.
Jack counted five children in all before they stopped entering the picture. Standing in a row, hands joined, they swung their arms back and forth, as if they didn’t have a care in the world. Finally, a small boy ran up and grabbed the man’s legs. He bent down and swooped the boy into his arms. The woman, her stomach round with yet another child, angled toward the man and kissed him.
Jack’s lips tingled as if the vision had actually pressed a kiss there. His chest nearly burst with all the joy and happiness floating around.
“I believe that’s us, Jack Billabard.” Sarah’s smile gave the sun a dash for its money.
“I believe you’re right, Sarah Billabard. Yes indeed, I believe you’re right.”
Before their eyes, the family faded and the tree disappeared . . . leaving behind a future and a promise of everlasting love.
