  Maxx

Do you have any idea what sound is more annoying than an actual alarm? The sound of an alarm that’s on vibrate dancing its way across a dresser. It’s like a buzzing fly that keeps swooping by your ear that just won’t go away! I wanna smash it with a hammer.

My elbow pushes against Logan’s arm, but he doesn’t move.

You’re right. I don’t know why I thought that was gonna work.

I slip my arm over him in an attempt to grab the phone only to become more annoyed by the fact my arm is too short to reach it with him in the way. Carefully, I slide my body across his, and yank the noisemaker up right as it stops.

  Son of a bitch.

Logan’s hips roll under me as he says on a yawn, “Seriously? Again? We just had sex like an hour ago.”

With the phone still in hand, I cross my arms and sit up so that I am completely straddling him. “Is that a complaint?”

His hands that were behind his head now rub at his eyes to help wake him up. “No.” I watch as his deep blues greet me along with a smug smirk on his face. “You’ll never hear me complain about fucking you, Maxx.”

Dropping my arms, I state, “Sounded like a complaint.”

To you too right? That was totally a complaint.

Logan reaches his hands up and begins to gently massage my boobs. My eyelids immediately close when his thumb grazes my nipple. My hips grind against him all on their own.

You know, I might need to read my manual. Figure out how the hell I can turn my body off from doing shit without my saying so!

With a light tug he instructs, “Moan.”

My mouth leaks out the request like an obedient puppy.

  Damn it.

There’s another soft pull and he says, “Louder.”

I croak out another one, just the way he wants.

Mother of God, what is wrong with me? If he tells me to fetch and roll over, am I gonna? Don’t respond to that.

Unfortunately, Logan’s cell phone begins to ring again in my hand. While I think it will stop him from making my boobs his new favorite plaything, I’m mistaken as he simply uses one hand to take it from me.

Prepared to brush off the vibrating machinery, he glances at it. Instantly, his entire demeanor changes. He removes the hand that was just sweetly torturing my nipple. I whimper from the sudden loss of his touch.

  Can you blame me?

  “Yeah?” he answers sitting up.

I know I should get off his lap, but it feels like my crotch wants to be glued to his.

His dick twitches like it heard me, so I wiggle to let it know we’re on the same page. Logan growls and gives me a good pop on the ass, which leaves a bit of a sting.

Is it weird that that felt good? If I don’t stop this, next thing you know I’m gonna be asking for him to paint the room red.

“No.” Logan insists rubbing the spot he just spanked tenderly. “I know.” Beat. “I won’t be late.” Another short pause. “Yeah. I know. I’m coming. I’m coming.” Shutting the phone off, he tosses it on his dresser and stares into my eyes, the playful look is now gone. After a long sigh he clears his throat. “I need to ask you something, Maxx, but I can’t do it with you naked and straddling my lap.”

Wrapping my arms around his neck I purr, “What can you do with me naked and straddling your lap?”

He growls and allows both of his hands to squeeze my ass. “Fuck, Maxx, really?” A pained expression comes on his face as his cock nudges between my legs. “You’re wet for me too, aren’t you?”

I slide my pussy across his dick, coating it. In an innocent voice I answer, “A little…”

Logan growls again squeezing his eyes shut. “Fuck…” A deep breath comes out of him. “Maxx…I need you off my lap now.” Sensing the seriousness in his sudden change of action, I roll off and back onto my side of the bed. Leaning over the edge of his bed he grabs one of his white t-shirts and holds it out for me. “Please, put this on.”

  “Why?”

“Because the only thing I can think about while you’re lying in my bed naked beside me is pinning you down and sucking those perfect nipples into my mouth.”

  Yes, please!

I pull his t-shirt on over my head, the feeling of his shirt is like being wrapped in his touch, tight and snug. Protected. With a deep inhale, his faint deodorant smell invades my senses, shooting a tingle between my legs, to a spot that doesn’t need any help getting wetter.

Popping his eyes open he takes one look at me and shakes his head. “This is not much better. Do you have any idea how fucking sexy you look in my shirt?” I go to answer when he raises a finger. “Don’t answer that. Because you’re gonna say something sexy or smart ass, and either way it’s gonna make me wanna roll you over and teach you a lesson.”

Not being able to help it I ask, “With spanking?”

“Damn it, Maxx!” He bites his bottom lip. “You’re gonna pay for that.” Not letting me have another word he says, “I’ve gotta ask you something.”

  “You’ve said that.”

Logan looks down, a clear contemplative look on his face. “Right.”

He clears his throat and I lift his head so his eyes meet mine. Softly I say, “Talk to me.”

  “There’s this kid,” he begins.

“You got a girl pregnant?” I shriek.

“No!” The boom from his voice pushes me back a little. “Hell no! No way in hell would I ever get a girl pregnant.” Quickly he continues, “There’s this kid. And he’s growing up like I did.”

  “And by that you mean—”

“Down to the same bruises. He’s a good kid. And I’m not gonna let him end up dead because I didn’t save him.” There’s a very distinct pain his voice.

I know this sound. It’s the same one that comes around when he’s had a night terror and can barely admit it.

“He’s not going back to that house. Ever.”

  “Okay…”

“He’s gonna live here with us, Maxx.”

“If Luke and Erin are fine with it then you know I am. Of course I am.”

  “And they are o—”

“What do you mean they are?” The realization causes me to shoot up in the bed. “Do they know about him already?” When Logan doesn’t answer I continue, “How do they know about him already? Why am I last here?”

“Because we’ve had enough other shit to deal with these last couple of weeks, remember?”

Right…we did have a lot going on. Hey, hey, attitude not needed.

“I was gonna tell you, Maxx. And I’ll tell you everything about him, but I
need to ask you something first.”

“I already told you that he could live here.”

“That wasn’t actually the question.” He clears his throat again, the nervous tick officially putting me on edge. “The Kid is moving in and if he has to sleep on the couch then he can, but I was wondering if maybe you uh…you wanted to move in together.”

My eyebrows fall down. “We already live together.”

“I mean will you move into my room with me, so he can have yours?”

  Oh shit. Am I hallucinating?

“Or let me move in with you so he can have mine? I figured you’d rather stop sharing your bathroom with Luke than—”

“Logan,” I interrupt excitement showing in my voice. “You want us to like…really live together?”

  “Yeah.”

“Is it just for the kid?”

He shakes his head. “Nah. You’re my girl. You should be with me.”

“But we just started dating! Shouldn’t we take things slow?”

Remind me, why am I fighting this?

“Slow? Maxx, we’ve practically been a couple for the last fifteen years.”

  Point. Logan.

“Look, if this idea freaks you out—”

  “It doesn’t.”

Clearly it does. Not quite sure why though. Maybe because it feels like it’s too good to be true? We all remember what happened last time I felt that way. No. No. We don’t have to talk about it.

He gives me a scolding look and my shoulders slump. “It really doesn’t. I just…I just don’t wanna live with you if it’s only so the kid can have his own room. There are ways around that. We can always convert the downstairs office into an extra room or the garage.”

“I wanna live with you, Maxx, regardless of the Kid moving in. This just…speeds up the process.”

A smile grows on my face and I toss my body at him. “Then, yes! Yes, I’ll move in with you!”

Logan’s arms wrap tightly around me, and I can feel all the tension he was holding fade away.

This is gonna be good for us. Wait. Why do you not sound as sure as I do?

  Chapter 2

  Logan

Pulling into Dean’s neighborhood, I give Maxx another look. “And you’re sure you’re okay with this?”

Maxx puts on a sweet smile and places her hand on my thigh. My dick responds.

You think it’s pathetic that she can’t touch me without me immediately popping a boner? You’re not the only fucking one. I’m like one raging hard on when she’s around. Was I this bad before?

“Logan.” Her hand starts soothing circles and my cock grows from the contact. Don’t pop up.

  “Yeah?”

“Once we get the Kid, how are we gonna keep him? Legally speaking?”

I stop my car in front of his house, and park behind a black SUV. With a cocky smirk I shrug. “I got that covered.”

Maxx looks wearily at me. “What do you mean you have that covered?”

Not answering, I open my car door just as she does. Now she’s on high panic mode.

  “What does that mean?”

“It means,” I say slipping the keys into my pocket. “That I have that taken care of. Exactly what I said.”

  “Logan Kellar—”

“Chill, Maximus. I’ve got legal documents releasing the Kid into my custody and making me his legal guardian if his father won’t just sign away all his rights.”

Maxx flops her back against the passenger door, folds her arms across her chest, and says, “And how the hell did you do that? You’d need a lawyer.”

  “Have one.”

Suspiciously she continues, “You’d also need someone to pull some strings.”

“Have that too.” She lowers her face to a scowl. Chuckling, I kiss her forehead. “You know you’re cute when you’re annoyed and I’m not the main source.”

She rolls her eyes. “You are the main source.”

I wink as the SUV passenger door swings open and the Kid hops out. His face immediately looks relieved.

Does no one have any fucking faith in me? I mean, I know you do, but even you’re a little touch and go about it.

Before he has the chance to say anything, C.J. speaks up buttoning his black suit jacket, looking like something straight out of a Donald Trump boardroom.

How much would you pay right now to hear him say ‘You’re Fired’ in his best Donald Trump voice? Oh what? Yeah you’re right. I should be focused. Kind of a critical moment.

“Kellar.” He adjusts the paperwork in his hand. “You’re absolutely sure about this?”

My eyes cut to Dean who looks like he is waiting for me to just punk out and leave him.

Fuck that. I know stability isn’t my thing, but there’s no way in fucking hell I’m letting that kid shed any more blood at the fists of his prick father. Besides, I’m not alone in this anymore. I’ve got the whole family. And you too. But you’re practically family now.

  “Positive.”

Maxx pipes up, “What is C.J. doing here, and why do I feel like he raided Christian Grey’s closet?”

“Is everything a book reference with you?” he responds, and I hide a laugh under my breath.

  More times than not.

“Seriously, C.J., Why are you dressed like that?”

He wets his lips. “Because it’s professional.”

  “You’re a bartender.”

  “Sometimes.”

“What do you mean sometimes?” she snaps and moves closer to him. When he doesn’t answer she stomps her foot. “C.J.!”

Whenever she stomps her foot I immediately feel like a five year old in trouble for eating paste in Kindergarten. You know you tried it too.

His eyes fall to the ground and Maxx asks, “You’re the lawyer?!”

  He mutters, “Technically.”

“What the hell do you mean technically?”

“Can we do this later?” He sounds annoyed shoving one hand in his pocket. “Kinda got a kid to free from the clutches of oppression.” Maxx surrenders her hands in the air while shaking her head indicating she’s giving up, but the look on her face shows that she’s pissed.

Can I just add I’m really thankful it’s not fucking me she’s mad at for once?

His eyes cut to me. “You ready?”

“Yeah.” I adjust my clothing and take a deep breath. Looking back at Maxx, I point a stern finger. “Stay. Here.”

  “But—”

“No fucking buts, Maxx. Stay. Here.” She nods and slides her hands into my pair of gym shorts she’s wearing.

That’s right. Wearing a pair of my baggy shorts and my white t-shirt. My girl is wrapped up in me, and sooner rather than later she’s gonna be full of me too.

“Come on, Kid.” My head tosses in the direction of the house for him to follow.

The three of us approach the front door. I can tell by the way Dean is shifting his weight back and forth that he’s terrified.

“I’m not gonna let anything happen to you,” I remind him with a firm squeeze of his shoulder. “My word. I need you to go in. Get your shit. And get out. Only take what really matters. Got it?”

  Dean nods.

After giving C.J. the signal to go ahead, he knocks sharply twice. The three of us linger impatiently waiting for a response. Suddenly the door swings open and a spitting image of my old man is on the other side.

First the kid looks like me, now his old man looks like mine? It feels like I’ve walked into my past. This. Is. Not. Good.

  “Mr. Cofax,” C.J. begins.

A grunt leaves him as he scratches his gray, grease stained shirt. His glazed over blue eyes are glaring at us. “What?”

C.J. tries to continue, “Your son—”

“That brat is barely my son.” Dean flashes a hurt look but keeps his face clinched. “The little shit hasn’t even been home for the last few days.”

“That’s because he’s been being kept safe,” C.J. speaks up seeing my fist tighten. “Mr
. Cofax, in the best interest of your son, the court has agreed to remove him from your home pending further investigation, giving temporary legal guardianship rights to Mr. Kellar.” The man just stares at C.J. waiting for something, but I don’t know what.

This dick can’t even muster up enough energy to pretend he gives a shit that he’s about to lose his kid? Are you fucking seeing this? Remind me again why I can’t drop him where he fucking stands.

“If you would like to argue this case, you are due in court—”

“I don’t give a fuck,” the scrawny, salt and pepper bearded man grunts. “I don’t fucking want the brat. Keep him.”

Dean’s face sags and I unclench and reclench my fingers warming them up for the inevitable.

I’m gonna beat the living shit out of him.

Sensing my anger, C.J. holds out a hand to stop me, opens the paperwork, and pulls a pen from his pocket. “That’s fine, Mr. Cofax. If you’ll just sign right here that can be arranged.”

He scratches at his olive skin again. “And what the fuck am I signing exactly?”

  “Your rights to your son.”

Snatching the pen without another word the asshole signs the forms where C.J. indicates before shoving it back at him. “Does this mean I never have to see his fucking face again?”

“That’s exactly what it means,” C.J. responds calmly, knowing that I’m losing any control that was left inside me. “If you’ll just give him a minute to gather his things—”

“He doesn’t have any shit that’s his.”

For the first time I speak. “Let him get his stuff.”

  “What did I just say?”

Annoyed, I reply, “What did I just say?”

C.J. hastily does his best to defuse the situation. “It’ll just take a moment and he won’t take anything of financial value. Just sentimental.” He directs his attention to Dean. “Do you understand?”

  Quickly he responds, “Yes.”
