  Rafael~

The scent of her was in his nostrils. A sort of aphrodisiac incense that clouded his brain. In a good way. It was as if Samantha Belfast had brought sunshine and wildflowers with her. With just a hint of damp, tangled sheets and pleasant exhaustion. As if she was surrounded by a cloud of good energy that billowed around her and affected all she came near.

He checked his jaw. She had packed quite a wallop. It throbbed and his teeth felt shaken. His soul felt shaken. But he couldn’t help breathing in more deeply. As his lungs filled with her fragrance, memory welled from someplace deep inside. He was plunged in an instant into the past.

He braced against the shock. His flashbacks were never pleasant. Often painful. Samantha was speaking, but her voice faded, as voices tended to do when he was in the throes of a flashback. The scent of flowers intensified. Tropical flowers. The roar of water covered all other sounds. He was standing naked under a waterfall watching the approach of a pure white beast.

She glowed with some internal light. Paranormal light. She shook her head and her purple mane rippled like a wave on its arched neck. Her great purple tail caressed the stones beneath her purple hoofs.

The unicorn marched daintily toward him, picking her way up the rocks. Splashing water made her long spiral horn gleam a brighter purple. The water darkened her purple mane and tail almost to black and her hide to gray.

He listened but he could hear no crack of hoof against rock. The rocks were slippery, but the beast was infinitely surefooted. And quiet. He could only watch in mingled amazement and joy. This beautiful, mysterious, magical creature belonged to him. She blinked huge purple eyes at him and two-inch-long lashes veiled their secrets and revealed them to him.

And then the unicorn became the loveliest female on the planet. The most beautiful naked woman. Her waist swelled above and below into lavish curves that made his palms tingle with anticipation.

Her breasts were tipped with mauve nipples that puckered as his eyes feasted on them. They bobbed deliciously as she approached him. She reached up to knot her wet hair into a casual bun. Her movement lifted her bosom like an offering to the gods.

And he was the god. Rafael was present, salivating, hungering. Aware this was a vision. A hallucination. And yet also removed from the scene. A paralyzed observer. Waiting for her. Or waiting for disappointment. His heart clenched. Her rosy lips opened. She held out round and flushed arms to him.

“Aren’t you going to help me up?” she cooed.

He reached for her hands. Clasped them. Felt the shock of contact with her electric aura. He tugged her up the last slick, mossy steps to stand with him under the cascade of water, safe in the circle of his arms. She leaned into his chest. A perfect peace radiated through his body. A calm clarity that was in no way diminished by his raging arousal. She wiggled against him.

It was a subtle invitation. It was a blatant come-on. It was carnal, innocent, lustful, loving. All at once. He lifted her to kiss the laugh
ter from her lips. Those soft and pillowy breasts pressed into his chest, the hard tips poked him like buds of fire. Exhilaration raced through his blood.

He felt powerful. Purified. Happy. United.

The glide of her tongue against his was sensual delight. Soft, slow, delicious. Not just because she tasted as sexy as she smelled. Not just because her gentle exploration ramped up his excitement. But because it was her kissing him. Her kiss promised love, a meeting of minds, a happiness that would last unto death.

She lifted her mouth from his. Nibbled his bottom lip. His cock twitched. “Are you ready?” she asked. Her voice was low, sultry, enticing, offering unconditional love.

  “Always.”

  CHAPTER ONE

  Honolulu, Hawaii,

  Four years earlier,

  Samantha~

Rafael D’Angelo knelt at her feet. His crisp black hair gleamed blue in the lamplight. The hands that clasped hers were large, elegant and strong. The hands of a surgeon or a pianist. The usual electricity threatened to short out Samantha Belfast’s heart.

“Samantha, darling, will you marry me?” He flipped the lid on a small blue velvet box.

“Oh, Rafael, it’s beautiful.” Samantha Belfast gazed stricken at the ring he was holding out to her. An immense diamond surrounded by amethysts the real color of her hair winked at her. Her heart leapt with joy, until reality reared its ugly head.

She gulped. A unicorn is always truthful. “I’m so sorry. I can’t accept it.”

Rafael rose gracefully and gazed down at her from his full six-three. Anger warred with puzzlement on his chiseled face. Her phoenix was so handsome and so masculine he made her weak at the joints.

  “Why not?” he asked softly.

“Unicorns only marry unicorns,” she explained. Hadn’t she explained that before? Their love was doomed and always had been.

  His dark brows rose. “Always?”

“Since the world began,” she assured him. Her family was proud – at least as proud as humble unicorns ever got – of their pure bloodlines.

“I’m good enough to sleep with, but not good enough to marry? Is that it?” he ground out.

Samantha shivered. Even though his voice was perfectly level, she knew Rafael was furious. Every cell in her body quivered at the ice in his voice. How could she truly be mated to a male who terrified her to her bones?

They were quite alone here in her living room. Her roommates were both out for the evening. She swallowed hard. Perhaps he had a right to his anger. She had led him on.

“How can we be fated, Rafael?” she objected gently, “When you are a hunter – a bird of prey – and I am a unicorn – born to be pursued by hunters?”

Rafael shook his head. Not a hair on his head moved. He had told her he preferred to wear it short because it curled riotously if he let it grow longer than a half inch. But of course in the military, short was regulation. And Maj. D’Angelo was Air Force to the core and proud of it.

“Dear heart, you and I love each other. How can we not be fated?” He held his arms open and she walked into them and laid her head on his heart. Peace settled into her soul as he enclosed her in his embrace.

“You keep telling me that you love me,” he whispered into her hair. Her hair that she dyed dull brown to conceal its pale purple color from mortal eyes and her CO.

“I do,” she assured him. “Unicorns don’t lie.”

“Make me the happiest phoenix in the history of the world,” he urged. “Marry me.”

She nestled into his broad chest, taking comfort from his closeness even as she accepted that they could never be. “We could never have babies,” she whispered sorrowfully.

He chuckled. “Of course we can. Beautiful babies. Phoenixes breed true. You will be a wonderful mother.”

“I would be too scared of hybrid vigor to have your babies,” she objected.

“Strong children would worry you?” His arms tightened. She knew he found her timidity off-putting. Phoenixes were risk takers. Daredevils. Heroes. Unicorns were cautious, careful, deliberate. As became a defenseless beast.

“That’s not what I meant,” she explained. “Back home that’s what how we describe the sorts of monsters that hybridization between shifters produces.” Everyone on West Haven knew that marriages between predator and prey produced sociopaths. She wouldn’t risk it.

He let her go. Almost pushed her away. “What the heck are you talking about?”

“When a hunter hybridizes with a non-hunter, their children are psychopaths.” Every child on West Haven had been taught from the cradle about the murderous, cannibalistic Haverstocks. Grizzly-fairy hybrids who had terrorized the entire island during the middle decades of the nineteenth century.

  “Rubbish.” He sounded very certain.

She told him about Owen Haverstock who had stolen, raped, and killed until finally he snatched Olivia Fairchild and kept her. Together they had raised a brood of criminals that nearly wiped out every islander before they were stopped.

“Your definition of hybrid vigor sounds like pure superstition to me,” Rafael declared firmly. Was that laughter underneath his flat baritone? “Just because one psychopathic grizzly shifter met an evil fairy and founded a criminal dynasty, doesn’t rewrite the laws of genetics. No one in my family is a rogue. And you certainly are not. Even if you think psychopaths are made, not born, there is no way our children would become antisocial criminals.”

She could not agree. She couldn’t take the chance.

He tucked the ring back into his pants pocket, his face resigned. “You need time, don’t you?”

She knew Rafael had told her what he believed to be the truth. That however didn’t make him correct. He held his arms open again. Again she walked into them. They closed comfortingly around her and momentarily she forgot her doubts and fears in the security of his fierce embrace.

“I love you, Samantha Belfast. Today and forever. Phoenixes love forever. You are my one true love. And I am yours.”

His mouth claimed hers with a fiery kiss that swept her away on a tide of passion. She found the torrent of physical feelings that his touch produced overwhelming. Always. It almost frightened her to experience such intense emotions and the accompanying mind-blowing arousal. Unicorns definitely did not do over-the-top sex or explosive emotions.

Phoenixes did. As her lover showed her once again. She stopped thinking as he lifted her effortlessly into his arms and carried her into her room. He shouldered the door closed. Left the lights off. He set her on the carpet and began methodically to remove her clothes.

She unbuttoned his crisp sports shirt. Peeled it away from hi
s bare chest. He was as smooth as a unicorn, but far more muscular. Like her, he wore dog tags. She placed her palms over his well-defined pecs and enjoyed his silky skin and flat brown male nipples. She bent forward to lick them.

He groaned. A masculine noise that thrilled her to her soul. As if the music they made when they made love was already thrumming through her veins. He angled her head and kissed her again.

His tongue tasted every corner of her mouth, rousing the sensitive tissues. Making her needy, desirous, insatiable. Like him. He tasted of love, of desire, of man. In that moment she did not doubt that he had been created for her.

She was naked. He still had his socks on. He hauled the bedspread down to the end of the bed and placed her on it. A moment later he was straddling her, socks off. “I love you, Samantha mine.” He kissed her again. A kiss that began as a conquering act melted into pure seduction.

She woke when he got up to dress and go home. He reached a hand into his pants pocket and showed her the ring box again, although he did not open it.

  “I’ll keep asking,” he vowed.

  CHAPTER TWO

  Mount Kilauea,

  Rafael~

Night flying was always more exhilarating than riding even the biggest wave or swimming with sharks. Perhaps it was the rush of being partially invisible to mortal eyes, or perhaps it was just taking greater phoenix. At any rate, Rafael was convinced that tonight’s solo flight would never be surpassed.

Tonight he was going to harvest living rock from the slopes of the volcano. Tomorrow he would bestow his treasure on his fated mate and transform his placid unicorn into his fiery phoenix bride.

Last night she had finally accepted his proposal. He had given her the diamond ring set with amethysts. The ring he had chosen to match her hair. She kept the hair on her head dyed a sober brown, but her bush gave her secret away. She blushed when he whispered, “To match your secret garden, Samantha darling. Will you make me the happiest phoenix in the world and wear my ring?”

Of course, with their relationship still a secret, she had hung it on the chain with her dog tags. But soon they could go public with their love, and his ring on her finger would announce to the world that she was taken forever. So, he was possessive. Went with the territory.
