That Beautiful Orange Gown Page 13

by Malone, Misty

  "Sure."

"I love it! That would be so fun! I love that idea, I'm keeping it. Any other ideas?"

"Yes, one, but I'm not sure if you'll like it. Just listen to it, then do what you want."

  "Okay. What is it?"

"I know you don't want to use any of the money for yourself, and I understand that. And I agree with you that I believe we can live on what we make. But you may want to consider one thing. This is money from your parents. I can't help but wonder what they would want."

Her expression changed. She'd obviously not thought of it in that light. He went on. "For instance, if they were here, would they want to pay for your wedding?"

  "Oh, absolutely."

"Then maybe you should let them. Not for the money, because quite frankly, we're not spending a lot on our wedding and we've got it covered. But if you take exactly the amount we spend on our wedding from the money when you get it and put it back into our account, that, in essence, would be letting them pay for your wedding. That, to me, would be like they are a part of our wedding. I didn't know your parents, but I think it would be nice knowing they're part of our special day."

Tears started flowing down her cheeks, and again she flung herself into his arms. He caught her and held her tight, letting her tears flow. Once she'd cried them out and recovered, she said, "Mom and Dad would have loved you, Nick."

That simple statement had his eyes watering up. All he could do was say, "Thank you," and pull her in for another heartfelt hug.

This time when she recovered, she wanted to talk. "I love that idea, Nick. I'd love to have them playing a part in our wedding. Anything else we could spend some of the money on? I mean, things that would give them a part in our lives?"

"Well, two more come to mind right offhand. I think they would be upset that they weren't here to help you manage your money with your first job, but I also think they would be so proud of what you've done to remedy it. Do you think they would want to help you with that, now that you've done enough hard work to prove to yourself, and to me, and to them that you can do it now?"

She thought a few moments and nodded her head. "I do. I wanted to do this myself, but if I look at it from their point of view, you're right. I do think they would be proud of me and want to help me now. That sounds so much like something they would do."

  "What do you mean?"

"A lot of times if I needed help, they wouldn't just give it to me. I had to do part of it first, to prove to myself and them that I could. Then they'd help. They said if it's just given to you, you don't appreciate it as much. They were right," she said after a moment.

"I think I would have liked them," Nick said. "That sounds like very sound advice. Maybe I should tell you something here. I don't want to upset you, but once we are married, I planned on paying off your debts."

"What? You did? You have that much money? Why would you do that?"

"I considered helping you earlier, but I agree with them. You had to prove to yourself that you could do it. And you have to feel that pride in doing it. You have that now that you know you can and did follow that program, which I readily admit was not an easy program, for six months now. But after we're married, your debts become my debts, just as my house, together with the mortgage that goes with it, becomes yours, too. We have to decide what we're going to do with that, too, but that's for another day. We decided to move into your house, which is debt free, and I'm really glad we did that since it's your family's home. It may be a different house, but it's the family home, on family land. I like that."

"Yeah, me, too." She thought just a moment and said, "I like that idea, too. I think they would be proud of me now and would want to pay off my debts so we could start our married life together debt free. It's kind of like they're giving me the help they couldn't give me in person."

  "I agree," Nick said.

"So what's the other idea for how we can include them in our lives?"

"Keep an open mind as we go through life. For instance, when our first-born and his twin sister go off to college, I think with some good financial planning along the way, we'll be able to pay for their college education. However, paying the college tuition for their four younger siblings at home yet, may be a problem."

Emily's eyes had gotten large at the mention of twins, but she was doubled over laughing by the time he finished. "Six kids?"

He laughed, watching her try to get her laughter under control. She finally succeeded and agreed. "I don't know about the six kids, but I get what you're saying, and again, you're right. Mom and Dad would love to be able to pay for college for their grandkids. We could make sure the kids know it's a special gift from their grandparents." She chuckled and added, "Maybe they wouldn't party as much and would study more if they knew their grandparents were footing the bill."

"Ooh, you are going to be a devious mother," Nick said. "I like it."

The two laughed and talked a little more about her inheritance she was about to receive. By the end of the evening she felt much better about it, and was actually excited. She'd decided she liked the idea of her parents being able to participate in certain parts of their lives, beginning with their wedding.

Before he left, Nick asked one more thing. "Now that you know you have money available, you can go out and buy any dress you want for the wedding. Are you going to buy something you think your mom would have liked?"

"No, it's already in my closet. I think Mom would love that beautiful orange gown, especially once I told her how special it's already been for me."

And so it was. Friday night found them gathered in a semi-circle with their two sets of friends who were closest to them, with the preacher in the front. After hearing the story of her inheritance, they all felt as if her parents were there with them, watching as their daughter married a very special man, while wearing that beautiful orange gown.
