“For her? So, it’s gonna be a girl? How do you know that?”
Evan laughed, throwing his head back. “So many questions, as always.”
“Tara showed you these visions, hasn’t she?”
Evan nodded. “Right before she was gone.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I knew Tara wanted you to see them too. I knew about the letter she left for you. And I waited for the day you would open it.”
“How did you know it would happen today?”
“I didn’t. But then I saw you putting the envelope into your pocket, and I thought it must be the letter.”
I touched my belly again, feeling something that I had never felt before. As if there was a secret, right inside me, that I didn’t want to share with anyone. Every fiber of me fluttered. I was going to be a mom… Can you imagine that? Of course, I often thought about my future and having kids, but now, that I was actually feeling one growing beneath my heart, I couldn’t find the right words to describe my emotions. I couldn’t stop smiling. I was just that happy. I could swear I could feel the heartbeat of my baby, or maybe it was just my imagination. There was nothing more amazing than feeling a new life being created inside me. Its energy was so pure, so calming and a little magical, as if the baby I was about to see in a few months already knew how to rule over magic, being the most magical thing that had ever happened to me.
“You are glowing,” Evan said, watching me.
“I can’t believe this. Oh, my God… She’s moving!” Right beneath my touch, there was a miracle happening.
“So what are you going to name her?”
The answer came immediately. “Paola,” I said. That was the name of the daughter of Gabriel Fairey and Lillian Wizardy, whose powers had become an essential part of me.
Evan smiled. “Somehow, I knew you would say that.”
“You always know everything!”
“I wish…”
I looked at my belly again. “Do you know if you and Amanda are going to have kids?”
“Well, first of all, we will get married. And then, yes, we will have a son, and a daughter.”
I was a little scared to ask my next question. “Will they be…gifted?”
“Of course. But it doesn’t mean I will need to leave them. There will be no masterminding in their blood. Only magic.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. “That’s great news. Do you know the names you will give them?”
“Dominick and Astrid, after my grandma.”
Together, Evan and I let Tara’s visions show us more episodes from our future.
Kevin and Elena were going to marry too. And they would have a son, named Richard.
As for William and Melanie, the number of kids in their family would be the biggest – two daughters and three sons. And all of them would be gifted with magic. No masterminding would pass to them from their father. He and Maribel would start talking, on the phone. But William would be more than happy to have at least one way of communication with his mother. And she, in turn, would be happy to have a chance to meet her grandchildren, with no risk of hurting them.
Elizabeth would go back to France, together with Marion, who would live in her home in Fontainebleau. Later, after Kevin and Elena would get married, they would move there too.
As for Darcy, she would meet a charming wizard, and together they would stay in Dever to teach students and live a happy life together.
Patrick and Amelia would be endlessly happy to watch their grandchildren running around their house in Norfield where Evan, Amanda, Christian, our kids and I would come to visit them.
Amanda and I would finish our education in Dever and together we would open an antique shop in Gloster, to be close to Evan, who would keep working in Dever, and then one day head it; and Christian who would head the League of Keepers.
Taima would become one of the best students in Dever’s history. After graduation, he would go to France to learn more about his father’s bloodline and life. He would become a historian of magic.
As for my parents, they would move to live in Norfield, a long and happy life together.
The visions vanished almost as fast as they appeared. I looked down at my hands, but Tara’s letter was no longer there. It disappeared together with the imaginary episodes from my future.
Evan was nowhere around. I smiled and looked at the sky, mentally thanking my friend for showing me the things that I wanted to see.
Everything was going to be all right. There would be no more wars between good and evil, or people dying to destroy the world we lived in. At least not in this life…
“Ready to go?” Christian asked, coming over to me.
“I’m gonna miss this place,” I said, looking around. For the first time in months, I could feel peace filling my heart and my soul.
He pulled me into his embrace and kissed my forehead, laughing quietly. “But we are not leaving forever. We will come back here in September.”
“I know. But I still feel a little sad… I love this place. Dever is not just my second home, it’s my life.”
“And it will be so, for many more years that are to come.”
I closed my eyes, feeling every fiber of my body and mind flutter with the love that changed my life forever. It was stronger than magic, or any other power that ever existed. I did a lot of things, both good and bad; I made mistakes and got into trouble that complicated my life immensely. But there was at least one thing that I did right – I gave my heart to the most amazing man in the world.
True they say – ‘Love can’t be seen or touched; it should be felt with your heart’. And at this very moment, my heart was beating faster and louder than ever; it had been charmed with a love so powerful, no spell would ever be able to break it…
