Heartland Junk_Part 3_Vitala Rising Page 8

by Eli Nixon

Why? There was no answer. Why did the universe exist at all? These were the whys humanity would never be prepared to answer. What is Vitala? Tell me this: What is God?

For some reason, some cosmic joke, certain drugs halted the genetic shift. They blocked Vitala's restructuring of our DNA. Only the lucky ones, the ones already ruined, got to see the change. Maybe it was all in the plan. Maybe junkies and alcoholics didn't fit into Vitala's vision of the new world. As a result, we got to stay high just a little longer and watch the slaughter unfold. Front row seats to the end of the world.

It was obvious now that the zombies really were breaking into two breeds. One would decay and die, their minds crippled by the changes, the madness of the transition. The other breed, the post-humans, would grow stronger on their corpses.

In time, everything either changed or died.

Except for me and the few remaining stragglers, mankind was extinct.
