The Midnight Door Page 24

by Sam Fisher

For those authors who insist that writing is not a solitary affair, I would like to politely disagree. For the most part it is entirely a solitary and grueling event that requires the discipline of a Zen monk. For that reason, I must apologize to all the people I have ignored, forgotten, and generally taken advantage of during the writing of this book. You know who you are, and I’m really sorry. Let’s get together soon!

In addition, there are of course the people who contributed directly to the manuscript, whose names should appear here. They include my agent, Rosemary Stimola, and her editorial assistant, Allison Remcheck — both brilliant and insightful as always. Thanks to Heather Young, for once again being my mirror, mirror, on the wall and letting me know which are the worst pages of them all. To Willa, the best daughter in the world, for being my first reader and giving the inside scoop on my target audience. To Margot, for awesome edits, and all the inexpressible sacrifices that only a true partner can endure. To Dave Cullen, for taking up the quill of John King, and to the other Sam (Bosma), who conjures amazing images from his equally amazing brain. And last, but the very opposite of least, is Nick Eliopulos, my incredible editor at Scholastic. Nick has labored through many drafts, cajoled, coaxed, and most importantly cared for every word of this manuscript. Thank you, Nick! Seriously, you are awesome.

Sam Fisher was born in England, and decided at the age of five that he wanted to be a writer. He now lives in Canada, where he teaches screenwriting, invents gizmos, and builds things out of wood. He wrote Scare Scape for his three fantastic children.
