Lord of the Hollow Dark Page 35

by Russell Kirk

After all, Marina thought, her hopes of Balgrummo Lodging had been fulfilled, although not through Apollinax. Friends, future, the Timeless Moment-she, with Michael, had them all now. And that hour of talk with Ralph Bain-that, too, was eternal, beyond the tooth of Time.

“Houses live and die,” she had read somewhere in Eliot’s poems. This house which they were entering might be near death; yet, good at need, it would shelter them from the winter wind. In they all went, defying Kronos. Even a bowl of dried rose-petals might keep Time the Devourer from the threshold.
