We spent the first couple of days together falling back into our old ways, taking a trip to the river to lay lazily in the sun, and ravishing each other every chance we got, doing our best to make up for lost time. But the day before my visit home was up, we finally had to talk.
“What do we do now?” she asked.
Her voice was no longer filled with tears and worry, I knew she felt stronger with me there, and I loved the strength in her voice, she reminded me of the girl I used to know. The one I fell so deeply in love with.
“Well, I won’t ask you to come to the city, it’s too much to ask of you.”
She nodded. I knew she hadn’t been expecting me to ask her to follow me.
“I couldn’t do that to my mom either. She needs to be here, she needs to be home, and I can’t possibly leave her.”
“Or your horses.” I smiled at her.
She beamed at me, thrilled that her life and accomplishments meant so much to me.
“So then what?” Rosie grasped my hand tightly and looked into my eyes. She was the only person that I felt could see straight into my soul.
“Then we find a way to make it all work. I’ll come home every chance I get and I’ll live here in the off season. You can come to visit me whenever you want and I’ll make sure your mom is taken care of when you do.”
She giggled a bit and I watched her hair blow in the wind as we sat on the fence watching her horses run and graze. “In the off season you’re willing to live here and be a cowboy? No more big city lights for you?”
I picked a piece of wheat and clamped it between my teeth. “I’ve always been a cowboy darlin’,” I teased.
She slipped the wheat out of my mouth and replaced it with her lips. She leaned her forehead against mine and sighed deeply in satisfaction. “We’ll make it work, we have to. I can’t let you slip away again. I need you too much. You make me whole.”
I was never going to let her go again and I felt sure that she knew that. It was as if my entire soul needed her just to breathe. When I finally left for the airport I sealed with a kiss the most important promise I could have ever made, that I was going to come back. That she wouldn’t have to live without me again.
It had been a month since I had seen her, but we had talked in every possible way, every free second that I had. Every time I saw her name light up my phone I felt home again, I felt perfect again. There was no doubt in my mind that I was ever going to want anything more than her. She had always been the one for me, she had been it, and I’d known it all along.
Anxious anticipation filled me as I sat on the plane ride back to the Bushnell, eager to see my girl again. I didn’t have much time off with football season heating up over the next few months. But I had no problem taking every moment that I was free and coming back home.
Especially this trip.
I wasn’t going to let her go again. I was sure everyone was going to think I was crazy, that we were moving far too fast, that we weren’t sure that our lives would match anymore. People would think that we were just living in our past but that didn’t matter to me. And I knew it wouldn’t matter to Rosie either. We knew what we wanted in our lives and we knew we needed each other more than anything else.
I had Granny to thank for all of it and she loved to smugly remind me. I knew that sneaky old woman had been up to something right from the start.
“It’s about time you two found each other again, we’ve all been waiting,” she said when she saw Rosie and I together. It had been her plan all along.
The plane touched down on the runway and I touched the velvet box in my pants pocket. I had no doubt she was going to say yes when I asked her to spend her life with me and more than anything, I couldn’t wait for it to begin.
There was a quick flash of memory when I stepped off the plane. The empty feeling I felt inside when she didn’t step off the plane so many years ago, the way my heart fell in a million pieces when I realized she wasn’t coming. I thought back to that day, how I never thought I’d survive it, and five years later there I was, stepping off my own plane ride. That day in the airport felt like a lifetime ago, from heartbreak to the preparation of a proposal to the only girl I’d ever loved was a wild ride.
The moment I saw her standing there in the airport waiting for me, it took all the pain of the past away. This was real, she was really there for me, and we were very far away from the kids we had been. But then I saw her run towards me, her blonde hair flying behind just as it always had when we were kids, and I had to laugh. Maybe we weren’t so far from the kids we used to be, and maybe that was how it should be. It was that bond, that young love that had been able to burn brightly enough to bring us back together.
I scooped her into my arms and twirled her in the air, her giggles filling my heart with happiness. If I had to relive all of that pain and torture without her again just to end up with the new her, so strong and sure in my arms, a woman who still had the soul of my childhood sweetheart, I knew I would do it all over again. To be home once again with her, I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
